    BSOD playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, random reboots 0x00000024


    Recently re installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM on my system and have been getting pretty random BSODs and reboots. I've had this problem before and eventually it went away before re installing windows, but I'm still using all of the same hardware.

    ASUS M4A88TD-V
    8gb
    2x AMD HD6870
    60gb OCZ Agility
    500gb WD Caviar Black

    Any help would be very appreciated.

    These crashes were caused by memory corruption (probably a driver). Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

    If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
    In other words STOP!!!



    1-Memtest.
    *Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

    *Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

    Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

    Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

    Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

    If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

    RAM - Test with Memtest86+



    2-Driver verifier

    Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

    I'd suggest that you first backup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

    In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

    Then, here's the procedure:
    - Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
    - Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
    - Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
    - Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
    - Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
    Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
    - Select "Finish" on the next page.

    Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

    If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
    If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

    Your first blue screen crash could be related to system or hardware problems.

    Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker up to three times to fix all errors.

    In case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. These you may want to run overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).

    Your second blue screen crash is related to your hard disk and may be due to hard disk errors or your antivirus program.

    I did see AVG secure search installed on your computer. Please uninstall AVG secure search through add/remove programs in control panel (Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Uninstall a program).

    What other antivirus software do you currently use on your system? Have you had any other antivirus programs in the past, and if so, how were they uninstalled?

    Thank you both for the quick replies. I ran the Memtest for one pass with no errors, I will run overnight tonight for better verification. I also Ran the driver verifier and had a bsod. Will include the dump with this post. I've also ran the scannow with no errors and did a disk check on both hdds also with no errors. Also, uninstalled the AVG search. I'm currently running Microsoft Security Essentials but that's it as I reformatted and reinstalled 2 days ago. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to udate the bios, don't think I've done that yet.

    The last crash was due to AsUpIO.sys and was a driver verified crash (as expected). It is also one of the drivers I recommended updating. Please update the driver, or uninstall the software associated with it for testing purposes.

    As for updating the BIOS, yours is from 2010, so it is current with Windows 7. We may try updating it as a last resort, but as of now, I see no need. Since BIOS flashing is risky, we try to narrow problems down to other possible causes first.

    I uninstalled pretty much all the provided ASUS software, and have been running the verifier, got another BSOD. Took a while to get Windows to load, kept rebooting, but got it back up now. Looks like something different now. I really do appreciate this help, off to see if it will BSOD again. Hehe.

    None of these were verifier based, but all point toward a related problem. It may be an underlying driver, but I am not seeing one. These are all likely do to a conflict involving your RAM. Definitely let us know what happens when you run those memory tests.

    Well I'm gettimg some pretty bad errors and freezes, windows isn't letting it load, can only get on safe mode. Gonna run the memtest again. Is it possible that its the memory or could it possibly be a bad motherboard.

    Edit- looks like I'm getting errors in memtest, 133 of them so far, yippee hehe.

    The Memtest86+ tutorial contains information about what to do when you get errors. The steps will test both your modules and the slots the modules are seated in to determine if it is a bad module or bad modules or a bad motherboard slot or bad slots.
