I assume that slot is one of the sets of dual slots? Some motherboards will not run a single module in certain slots, but work fine when there is dual channel being utilized. You may have to check and see if running two modules allows the system to boot. If you still have the same problem, that slot may be defective meaning the motherboard should be RMAd.
Also, refer to your motherboard manual regarding your RAM slots to see if anything is said about running dual versus single channel. I took a glance at your manual, and I do not see anything regarding running single channel other than you cannot enable the dual channel mode with a single module installed. Try disabling the dual channel mode in the BIOS and see if you can run the single module in that slot. If you still are unable to, I would suggest contacting Gigabyte and seeing what they say.
Well when both sticks are in the computer boots but only displays 2gb of memory. Also on the booting screen whether 1 or 2 stick be in it says memory is running at single channel so i checked the BIOS but couldn't find any option to switch it to dual.
meaning it was already at single channel and i could not run either stick in the defective slot
I am wondering if this is due to 2. I assumed it was enabled through the BIOS, but reading over the manual more thoroughly, I see this is not a BIOS option, as you said. It is probably automatically enabled. If you have a bad slot, it could be interfering with dual-channel memory, as well. Are you using two different types of modules, or are they the same model (to rule out 2. as a possibility)?Gigabyte Manual said:

Would buying some new RAM just for the purpose of double checking do anything? What about reformatting and going back to 32bit like i had before?
The first thing I would suggest doing is contacting Gigabyte and seeing what their support representative says. I have a feeling you have a bad motherboard slot and the board will need to be replaced.
