    BSOD with BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER error

I tried to do as suggested for a BSOD issue, and download the dump & system file collection program...but my pc is in such bad shape it won't even recognize a .exe file and asks me what program I want to use to open it. I try to save it so I can double-click to open, but it won't let me save it either.

I'm getting all sorts of problems, including a BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER error with my BSOD, a low disk storage error, and my pc won't do anything intensive such as watch videos on YouTube, etc.

To give a hint, I did have some sort of virus issue in December and the issues started at that time. Norton now says I don't have any virus issues, but the damage apparently has been done.

I was also getting errors something about the video display stopped responding and then recovering...but this has stopped recently.

Anything you can do to help me, I'd appreciate it.

Update - I just did what was in this thread...

    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/165554-usb-driver-general-fix-problems.html

and I've not had much time to see if it fixed much...but I still cannot watch YouTube videos...I get all the text to load, but the video itself is just a black box and won't do anything.

Update - just got the "low disk space" error on E: drive. Seems like I'm still having the issue with only my wired mouse and keyboard plugged in.

Another update. I ran the driver verifier, and upon rebooting got a BSOD saying I had a driver that was corrupting the system. But now I need more help. It says in the verifier instructions to :bring up an elevated administrative cmd/DOS screen" and type verifier /query...

How do I bring up such a screen? I'm sorry but I'm a newbie at this.

    Thanks, Dave

    Hello there Dave...

    > Symantec is a frequent cause of BSOD's.
Please remove and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST

    Thanks JMH.

    1) I can't download Security Essentials...I click on the download button and nothing happens. I even tried to right click and say "open in new window", but nothing happens.

    2) I ran MalWarebytes and it found nothing back in December...but I'll run it again.

I'm tired, going to bed, but I'll post up tomorrow what I find.

It may be your Norton {or indeed Malware} that is blocking you downloading MSE.

    I would suggest it is good practise to run Malwarebytes far more often than you apparently do. {I run it nightly.}

Ok, so I got it to download MSE, but when I select RUN, it shows the % downloaded, and then when it finishes, it asks me what program I want to use to open it. I can't properly download or run any executables. Any idea how to fix that?

BTW, I disabled Norton temporarily already.

I read the threads on file association and still cannot get ANY file to run. I even tried this thread
Default Programs - Associate a File Type or Protocol

and picked .exe from here, but that would not work, so then tried .reg from here and that still did not work
    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

and then enabled regedit so that I could get the reg download...
Regedit - Enable or Disable - Vista Forums

by using the elevated command prompt learned here
Elevated Command Prompt - Vista Forums

Even after all this, no matter what I seem to try to download, it always asks me to select some program to "open" the file. ANd if I click save, then it does save...but when I double click to open, I'm prompted for a program to open it...

THis is an endless loop....help please!
