x64 Windows 7 Pro - BSOD Every Few Weeks - Too Many Stop Codes to List

I have a problem with a Dell Optiplex 580 running Windows 7 Professional x64. Here are some of the basic specs:

Memory: 4GB, Non-ECC, 1333MHz DDR3 (2x2GB)

Hard Disk: 250GB SATA 3.0BG/s and 8MB Data Burst Cache
Display Adapters: 256MB ATI Raedeon HD 3450
DVD/CD-ROM Drives: DVD+/-RW 16x
Network Adapters: Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller
Sound/Video/Game Controllers: Realtek High Definition Audio

The PC is only about 15 months old, but started to blue screen about two weeks out of the box. The issue usually occurs overnight when the PC is idle, but not always. The crash dumps show that every two weeks or so it goes down and has to be restarted. Using the Windows Debugger tool, no less than eight different stop codes (atikmdag.sys, win32k.sys, ntkrnlmp.exe, Ntfs.sys, Pool_Corruption, fileinfo.sys , win32k.sys, rdbss.sys) are shown as possible culprits. So much for finding one single silver bullet for fixing this thing!

Dell’s chat support offered little help. After informing them that I had run the Dell Diagnostic Utility and that no apparent hardware failures had been detected, I was quickly told that I “have a corrupt OS” and that I “need to reinstall Windows.” This was before I even provided them with a single stop code or bugchecks analysis. I gave them a string of bugchecks and after about two minutes of radio silence, I was told again “corrupt OS, reinstall.”

After not getting the answer(s) I wanted from Dell, I decided to do a little more research before committing to a total rebuild (after all, if the OS is truly corrupt, it came that way from Dell, so why would I want to go about reinstalling the OS, essentially doing their job for them?). I found some advice on this forum and others, but following up on these tips have not yielded (at least for me) a definitive cause. Here is what I have done so far…

1. I have run the full Dell Diagnostic Utility (mentioned above), but have found no hardware errors.
2. I have run a full virus/malware scan with MBAM and MSFT Security Essentials (both fully updated), but found no evidence of malware.
3. I stress tested all drivers using Verifier.exe, but no BSOD occurred after reboot.
4. I ran 3 or 4 passes with Memtest86 with no errors
5. I have run a CHKDSK C: /F /R with the following results:

I am pretty much stuck as to what I should do next. The people at Dell may be correct that I need to reinstall the OS, but before going to the trouble of doing so, I wanted to rule out several potential issues before getting started on that.

The computer is up-to-date with Windows Update. It has the latest BIOS version, and as far as I can tell, all drivers are signed and up-to-date. Any help that can be provided would be great. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply. I instaled the Catalyst driver and saw no errors in the install log. I rebooted, then ran the SFC /SCANNOW Command from the elevated Comand Prompt. No integrity violations were found. I sure do hope that this does the trick. Would the SFC /SCANNOW command be the only way to verify that this has been fixed? The only reason I ask is because the PC only crashes once or twice a month. So in the past, I have applied what I thought might be the fix, only to have it BSOD a few weeks later. I was not, however, using the SFC /SCANNOW Command afterwards, so who knows if it would have spit out a few integrity violations. Again, thanks for your help. I will report back to let you know if anything else pops up.

Do what Jaidyn suggests first as your video driver is over two years old and System file check will give you a good indication of win 7's health.

In looking at your 23 crashes (in one day, ugh) I noticed a pattern emerging. Fifteen of them were caused be a "memory exception" (c0000005) which is probably a driver.

Given that please run these two tests

Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have raid update its Driver.



Memtest.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

Driver verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Special Pool", "Force Pending I/O Requests" and "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen.
Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly.
The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.
If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation.

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

Thanks for the input! I don't know if the red font is part of your signature or specific advice to be, but there's no overclocking going on with this PC, and there's no RAID, so no driver to update. I have run Memtest86 and Verifier.exe with no errors. Since the system file check came up clean, I am hopeful that the issue has been resolved. It is strage, because I could have sworn I had updated the video driver previously, but I guess not. I hope that this will be the last I see of this issue on this PC. Thank you again for your help!

My worst fears gave come true. In the past, whenever I tried fixing this PC, Everything seemrd to run fine for about 4 weeks, when all of the sudden the PC BSODs on 3/28 and 3/29. The user received the following error report both times. I have attached the dump files. I would think that the two most recent ones are the ones needing reviwing.

Still memory exceptions made worse by over 14 days straight uptime. That in itself may be why it seems ok for 4 weeks then starts crashing.
These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (cx05) probably a driver.
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have raid update its Driver.



Memtest.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+



Driver verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Special Pool", "Force Pending I/O Requests" and "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen.
Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly.
The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.
If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation.

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.
