Win7 Home Premium never loads completely. Happens in safe mode also...

I have a relatively new HP Pavilion p6610f w/ Windows 7 Home Premium. Nothing has been installed in it but I have tons of documents and pics.

All of a sudden, the PC stops loading completely. With safe mode and regular mode, it loads to the welcome screen (the light-blue screen displayed just before the logging icons), and it just stops there. The PC is not frozen because I can move the mouse and the caps/num keys turn on and off, but it just displays that screen.

I tried booting with another Windows DVD I have, and it also gets stuck.

    What else can I do?

I was thinking that it could possibly have a virus, but I'm not sure how to run an AV if Windows doesn't load.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Howdy,

So absolutely nothing has been installed and only files have been transferred to it. How young is this system, and is it from retail? Are there any peripherals or extraneous USB devices (like an external HD) attached to the system?

Have ya tried running SFC at boot-up to ensure everything is in working order? You may wanna do that, as well as /chkdsk r while you're in the recovery console.

    hi,

While your computer is off press the start button and keep pressing F8 untill you see the windows startmenu once there you should see an entry that says "fix your computer" did you tryed that yet ? also when windows get's stuck is there any harddrive activity ? (you can see that on the leds) i would run diagnostics just in case allthough you mentioned the machine is new.

    Thanks for your replies.

From what I've gathered, SFC can only be run when I boot with a Windows 7 DVD. I've tried booting up with a Win7 DVD and through all possible options available after pressing <F8> and none of them take me to a window that allows me to choose something.

Anything that has to do with Win7 loading will not work. My only option is to check the hard drive before Windows loads.

Also, the desktop is about two years old. The only thing USB devices connected to it are the mouse, keyboard, and a USB wireless adapter. These have all been there from day 1.

Like I mentioned, it's a retail system: HP Pavilion p6610f w/ Windows 7 Home Premium.

    Thanks again.

See if Parted Magic, or one of the 'live' GNU/Linux distros, will load and run normally. If not, try running the memory test. Seems you'll have to do that from the 'live' boot disc of your choice, since you say you can't get to a productive screen with f8, before the MS Windows boot.

Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English) may very well help. It is possible one of your peripherals (most often USB) entered an invalid power state and needs to be reset. USB ports do this a lot to protect the system from power surges resulting from devices being plugged into them.

F8 only brings you to options to choose how Windows will load. Rather, you want to enter your boot menu or BIOS to change the boot order or select a device to start up first (which you want the Windows 7 cd too). The key to open the BIOS/Boot menu varies depending on manufacturer and OEM, but they will display the proper key(s) to press on the screen very early in the boot process.
