Random BSoD, Driver Power State Failure, reports blame ntoskrnl.exe

Hello and thanks for letting me post on this awesome forum!!!!

I am fixing a family members computer and it has stumped me. I have tried everything that I can find online related to my problem outside of reinstalling but I think it could be a hardware (power or memory) issue from what i read and a reinstall wouldnt fix it.

Driver_Power_State_Failure

I cannot trigger the BSoD of cue. Ive tried quite a bit, bringing it back from sleep, full load, no load, Skyrim, and different video cards.

I have been using Bluescreenviewer / myeventviewer to give me some incite but I couldn't find anything that would help my particular problem. So i present it to the people that know more then me, the online community. I followed the BSoD posting rules but let me know. Ill be checking back frequently.

PS this computer is having raid issues. I get "Degraded NVIDIA mirror 931.51G" red flashing error for a couple seconds during boot. I dont know if this is related but BSoD's did not start at exactly the same time, but quite a bit of time after, I am told.

A few issues

1-asacpi.sys

The pre 2009 version of this driver is a known BSOD cause.

Scroll down to the utilities category, then scroll down to the "atk0110 driver for windowsxp/vista/windows 7 32&64-bit" (it's about the 12th item down).

Download and install it.

Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers to check and make sure that the asacpi.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (not before).

2-These were all related to your NVIDIA nForce RAID Driver. Yours is from 2006. Update to current of remove.

How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

Well done, you fixed the computer as far as I can tell. No BSoD's since I updated the drives that you pointed out.

1. asacpi.sys was one of my many problems but did not end the BSoD's.

2. I am having trouble locating the raid drivers for this motherboard/chipset. If you could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. I did update nvrd64.sys using this blog, it was what I found and it has worked well but I not quite sure of its credentials or if I am missing any other files that come with the manufacturers raid driver pack. I am still recieving the "Degraded NVIDIA mirror 931.51G" during boot.

3. After updating the rest of the drivers one by one, restarting after each, the BSoDs stopped, and the computer has been running normally since this posting. If the status changes you can be sure I will use this forum again. Very satisfied and easy to follow!!!!

PS - What are your thoughts on programs like DriverGenius? Seem to be very convenient but an easy way to install the wrong driver. How accurate are they?

Avoid automated driver updating programs. They often install driver updates to hardware that is similar to that on the system they provide the update for, but those drivers do not always work for the similar hardware and cause conflicts.

If you are having a lot of difficulty finding the RAID drivers, you could try an automated program, but if you do, I recommend that you create a restore point prior to installing the drivers. Also, only install drivers that you know you need to update. Do not update drivers just as a routine maintenance step as it is often not necessary to update drivers and can be detrimental to system performance.

Another option for finding drivers is the Drivers - Windows 7 Forums forum on these forums. Experts there should be able to help you track down any missing drivers.
