BSoD from just gaming to browsing, BCCode: 116

Hi, been crashing with increasing frequency for a few months now. All I see is a black screen with the sound on a short, never-ending loop, but after rebooting, windows reports it as a blue screen. BCCode 116, so I thoroughly purged the comp of dust, and have monitored both the GPU and CPU temperatures when gaming, and even just browsing. Lately, the crashes have gone from just gaming to even non-load crashes, so I'm looking for help to find a fix.

    Here's the specs. Built the computer myself a bit over a year ago. Fantastic performance and stability for a long time, now the stability part is gone;

Windows 7 x64, full retail (I installed it on hard drive)
Intel i7 950 (stock cooler, re-applied thermal paste once after removing heat sink for proper dusting)
2x EVGA GTX 460 SC (so yeah, SLI. One card will always run 5-10 degrees higher when under equal load. Cant tell if GPU difference or just its position in comp.)
    Gigabyte X5A-UD3R

    (More detail on circumstances)

Originally, I was going to blame the freezing on overheating, but having just been playing LoL and Tribes lately, along with the most recent and thorough system clean, the vid cards have been running comparatively cool as to when I played a lot of Crysis. Neither have exceeded 90, and have not run into the mid 80s in either game. Crysis 2 used to push one of the cards up to the high 80s, yet the system would run stable, and I must say the visuals were amazingly smooth. And now of course, it's started BSoDing when not gaming. Browsing, opening a window from the background, and other misc. actions have triggered BSoD.

This led me to checking the CPU temp. The intel stock cooler is kind of pathetic imo, but idling at 55 degrees is in no way dangerous (as far as I know, feel free to teach me otherwise if not ). CPU refuses to exceed 76 degrees when I've tried to put it under load.

The last post-start-up report looked like this, and I'll collect a few more just in case:

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
    Locale ID: 3081

    Additional information about the problem:
    BCCode: 116
    BCP1: FFFFFA800AA71010
    BCP2: FFFFF8801011BAA4
    BCP3: FFFFFFFFC000009A
    BCP4: 0000000000000004
    OS Version: 6_1_7601
    Service Pack: 1_0
    Product: 768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
    C:\Windows\Minidump\030712-51589-01.dmp
    C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-414978-0.sysdata.xml

Thanks in advance to anyone who would look into the problem. The attached .zip contains 2 RPM reports, and the Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2. No idea why it cant detect my antivirus, Norton 360 is running live and fine in the background.

    Hello,

You mentioned you get a black screen that after a reboot is reported as a bsod this make me think your graphics card has a problem.Try to check for updates by using windows update and specially look out for update for your hardware devices. If you can't find anything with windows update then try your hardware manucfacterer website(be sure to select the correct model).

    Hi,

Did you forget to attach the jcgriff file to your thread? Attach it, and also C:\Windows\Minidump\030712-51589-01.dmp

The BSOD analysts will require this information to troubleshoot.

    Regards,

Oh whoops, I thought I attached it, sorry about that. Trying again

@ Erikbe, I agree, it's probably the vid card. Been changing drivers a LOT in the last month or so hoping for an improvement. Gone from older betas, to a couple of new betas, to WHQ stable release of what WAS my older betas... lol. No improvement unfortunately. Currently on 295.73 WHQL.

Ahh, I forgot to press 'upload' in manage attachments. Sorry about that added the dmp file too, thanks for telling me.

These are all stop 0x116 VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE conditions.

It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception.

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash. As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds. If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating. Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU. Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference. If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.
The above quote was taken from https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tml#post280172, which is linked to in usasma's thread about this error. Closely follow the first three posts of usasma's thread outlining STOP 0x116: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR troubleshooting and proceed through each step. Let us know if you need further help.

Remove Gigabyte Easy Saver - mobo power utility as it is known to cause crashes for older versions.

Thanks for the help, updated the drivers you linked. Just gone through 2 LoL bot games, no crashes, seems good at initial examination. Massive thanks

Well, the prelim was good. Now it's been crashing with disturbing frequency without gaming, and reliably when trying . Seemed to start when gigabyte re-installed/updated ET6 when I had it uninstalled. It all seemed to go to hell after that. Tried to uninstall it. Couldn't find it, doesn't exist in the programs list. System restore to after the fixing, and before the 'update'. Comp still crashing :/ . Gonna go through the list you gave again in case the sys restore somehow undid it.

Well, I went through the installs again, and decided to try running the comp with the case off while gaming, to see what happened. Played a round of LoL the hotter card stayed at 67 degrees, no worries there, but LoL never put much pressure on the vid card anyway. Pull out Tribes: Ascend, which used to keep the hotter card at 83 degrees. Ran on a steady 74 with the case open, and no crashes were had for an hour and a half of gameplay. Maybe the issue WAS temperature, despite Crysis 2 running both cards hotter, longer, and stable in previous months.

Then I decided to open skype (which I had closed on the desktop since I'd been using a laptop to chat with my mates through all the crashing/restarting). Go to open skype and-

Boom. Computer freezes within 3 seconds of double clicking the skype logo.

While this was a different freeze than previously (screen froze, no black screen), I deeply suspect skype has some sort of part of it, because I have had skype running through each and every one of the previous crashes.

So my question is this; anyone know how skype can crash a computer? Could skype somehow result in a BSoD with bccode 116 (the previous crashes)? Or could there be a combination of problems?

Have you run the graphics card tests in that link I gave to the thread by usasma?

Also, if Skype is involved, I would have to know how you are using it to provide possible suggestions. Is it only audio, or are you doing video Skype as well?
