I have a linux installation on the same machine where I have my important files backed up...I'd like to avoid the hassle of going through the installation of all my programs again.

Boot into Advanced Boot Options and choose the Last Known Good Configuration option. This should start Windows with the last known registry and driver options that worked.
Are you able to get far enough to do that?
You might also want to run a chkdsk on the system partition to check for bad sectors or system errors. If you use Option 2 and the command prompt at startup you should be able to run it.
