Laptop Shuts Down Suddenly 0x8000000000000002

Hey everyone, so I recently got my laptop (ASUS G53JW) back from the ASUS service centre and that was to replace the DC jack port as the pin broke off in the port from the charger. They didn't change the motherboard, just the port as it was a defective part and caused the pin to break off.

I have no idea what they did to my laptop at the service centre, but since getting it back (yesterday) I have an issue with the laptop....I have started to get random shut downs without any warning at all. I am just sitting browsing the internet or playing a game and the laptop powers off without any blue screen, error, or warning. It boots back up right away, except for the latest time where it powered off (shortly after I plugged in my iPod) and then it kept shutting down in the boot screen about twice. I unplugged the iPod cord (and thus the iPod itself) from the USB port and that seemed to allow it to boot back up. Funny thing has started to occur as I changed what USB port I plug the iPod into, it randomly starts charging and then stops (but the cord is still plugged in)....

I checked event viewer, as I don't get a BSOD or anything and this is what I keep getting every single time these shut downs occur:

Please tell me this isn't a hardware issue yet again....I am getting very sick and tired of ASUS and this laptop...I've had the HDD go on it in Dec and had to RMA it....and the charger pin breaking off twice....this is my latest issue with the laptop and it's annoying because I lose what I am doing.

I am thinking it is a driver issue as I checked my PC temp thru a program and the GPU temp and it seems fine. They're normal temps for my laptop, so I doubt it is overheating. I also had a fan plugged in, but I took it out just now because it may be an issue with the USB ports....I don't know but I am very frustrated as I just got this back from the service centre yesterday and 2 hours from that this shutdown issue occurs.

Obviously it is something ASUS did during their lovely RMA process. They didn't do a fresh install of windows or anything. Just replaced the DC jack and according to the RMA form I got, they did a Fulmark stress test and it says it passed.

EDIT: and just after typing this, I realized that my mouse has stopped working and it is still plugged into the USB port...sometimes it lights up again and it works but after a bit it stops again. What the heck is going on here?

EDIT 2: and now it seems to be stable again, I took my iPod charger cord out of the USB port it was in, and the mouse became fine, then I plugged the iPod USB back in and it's also fine...both are working fine so far...just waiting for the next shutdown, I suppose. I am going to keep my fan unplugged as well just to see if it resolves anything. The fan runs off the laptop itself, and plugs into two USB ports...so maybe that contributed? I had this fan for a month or two tho and it hasn't made any issues. This shutdown problem has started since yesterday when I got my laptop back from RMA.

Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events

Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder

Some of the shutdowns occured as my sister was browsing the internet and she says she wasn't doing anything else on the laptop at the time. It just shutdown as she browsed her sites. So maybe it is a hardware issue yet again. IDK but I will leave it to the experts as I know nothing about this

Just got another shutdown. I booted up my laptop, and everything was fine. The only thing I had plugged into my laptop's USB ports is my mouse.

I decided to plug in my iPod charger cord into one USB port and that made the mouse stop working and the laptop never read my iPod charger...so I took that out and tried another port and that shut down my laptop again. No BSOD just a shut down and then when I press the power button it turns on again with no issues. I just plugged in the mouse into the same USB port that I plugged the iPod charger into to see if it is an issue with the port itself and it didn't shutdown my laptop. It proceed to install the driver for the mouse for that USB port...the laptop froze for a few seconds and then unfroze and it said the driver installed sucessfully. No shutdown as of yet.

So I am just guessing here but it is a driver issue with my laptop?

USB Recommendations for driver/power issues:

• Start with USB Driver - General Fix for Problems to resolve the USB issues. Also, USB ports can sometimes enter a safe power state to protect the system from power surges due to USB devices. To reset the USB ports to a nominal power state, use a hard reset to resolve hardware and software issues which works for all computers, not just HP Pavilions (minus the HP driver update step).

And what happened was, the exact same thing. When I plug my iPod charger into the port it's always been plugged into, it just disconnects and then reconnects over and over again despite the cord still being plugged in the entire time. When I take the cord out to plug it into the USB port on the other side of the laptop, it shutsdown right away.

I have no idea what is causing this issue. I really don't want to do a fresh install, especially for it to maybe still end up doing the same thing.

Any other ideas about what could be causing these shut downs?

Another thing that may or may not be useful but after I uninstalled all the faded out USB ports, I plugged my mouse back in and that worked fine...I then plugged in my iPod charger cord to the same port I've always had it in and the laptop proceeded to install the driver for it, it then gave me the notification that the driver could not be installed successfully because the "device has been disconnected" despite me not removing it or the cord. It was after that I tried the different port and it shut down.

Have you tried Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English) as well? It could still be a power state issue if you have not done that step.

I just tried that and it didn't work. I don't even know if I did it right...I have an ASUS G53JW, and what I did was I first removed the AC cord from the laptop so it was just on battery and I disconnected all USB devices, everything even the internet cord. I removed the battery and the laptop shut down since there was no power source. I don't think it was supposed to do that for the hard reset but idk as I've never done one before so I proceeded to hold the power button for 15 seconds. After that I inserted the battery back in, I powered up and connected all devices when it was booted up. The mouse plugged in fine, everything except the iPod charger cable. I don't know if this info is useful but I plugged it into the other USB port on the right side of the laptop (where the DC jack is and all that) and THAT was when it shut down. I hadn't even plugged in the iPod. Just the cord itself and right away it shut down.

Could the cord itself be causing the shutdowns?

I have a second laptop (an HP) that I barely use aside from lectures and I need to charge the iPod so I stuck it into the other laptop where I would usually do so and what happens is the iPod connects and disconnects just as it does when I plug it into the USB port I usually do on the ASUS...this laptop doesn't shutdown tho so far.

I am going to borrow an iPod charger cable from a friend and see what happens, if the shutdowns still occur while plugging it into my ASUS. This may be in awhile tho and is this even possible for something like the cable itself to cause such shutdowns?

It sounds like you have a bad cord that may have shorted out something on the motherboard of the laptop. And before you removed the battery on your laptop, you were supposed to shut it down and turn it off. Guess I should have given my steps since the HP steps do not include that step and just assume every user would know this.

1. Shut down and turn off the computer.
   
2. Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a
   laptop).
   
3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds (the HP site says 15, but 30 ensures all power
   is drained). This closes the circuit and ensures all power from components is drained to clear
   the software connections between the BIOS and hardware and clear any corruption in the
   temporary memory.
   
4. (If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back
   into the wall.
   
5. Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware.
