BSOD - Computer randomly restarts, sometimes freezes

Hi, my computer has been freezing and randomly restarting the last couple of days.

When it restarts sometimes it has to boot a couple of times, it seems as though it can' boot the BIOS, the bios splash screen is also different, this also changed 2 days ago.

The first couple of times it froze, now it just restarts randomly. I suspect the motherboard.

    System Info:

    - x64 Windows 7 Professional
    - Full Retail

-Age of system hardware: 4 years
-Age of OS installation 6 months

    Possible cause is Drivers...

See if taking care of the above provides stability. If not, we will have to do more troubleshooting to narrow down the driver.

Devices that are known to cause issues with Windows 7:
    Code:
    SmartDefragDriver	fffff880`01d8e000	fffff880`01d95000	Fri Nov 26 02:29:40 2010 (4cef7e04)	0000be1a SmartDefragDriver.sys
    sptd	fffff880`0100d000	fffff880`01174000	Fri Aug 19 22:34:53 2011 (4e4f396d)	00090679 sptd.sys
    • Please remove 3rd party defragmenting software. Windows 7 has some very nice built in defragmenting. If you want to have the same functionality from it as you are getting from SmartDefrag, you can run defrag in an elevated command prompt with the -w flag. You can also run a boottime defrag with the -b flag to improve boot performance.

      defrag -c -w -v
      defrag C: -b -v
The first command runs on all drives and optimizes defrag to move important files closer to the center of the disk. The second command will optimize boot by defragging boot files.

    • Please remove any CD/DVD virtualization software, such as Daemon Tools/Alcohol 120%, as they use a driver called sptd.sys that is known to cause BSODs. Use add/remove programs to remove the software. After removing the software, use the sptd.sys uninstaller to remove sptd.sys from the system.

I prefer TotalMounter as my CD/DVD virtualization software as it allows me to burn images to a virtual CD/DVD if I just want an ISO file instead of a disc, and it is free.

Many use MagicISO - Convert BIN to ISO, Create, Edit, Burn, Extract ISO file, ISO/BIN converter/extractor/editor as well, which is also free.

Hi, I did the recommended however the BSOD are still ongoing, and have increased with frequency the last few days.

There are no new drivers available for the motherboard.

    Device Concerns:
    Code:
Network Controller	PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0029&SUBSYS_3A7D1186&REV_01\4&9418CF&0&3020	The drivers for this device are not installed.
Make sure drivers are installed for all network devices. The above is an Atheros wireless network device.

    Software Concerns:
Spybot Search and Destroy is not the best malware/spyware utility. Take a look at Good and Free system security combination. for better options.

    Analysis:
    Please disable Verifier:
Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click Command Prompt -> Run as administrator -> Type the following command and then Enter:
    verifier /reset
    -> Restart your computer.

Crashes primarily point to memory issues:
    • Run the boot version of Memtest86+ paying close attention to Parts 2 and 3 of the tutorial. Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. These you may want to run overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).
         Warning
Before you proceed with the following, answer these two questions: Are you still under warranty? Does your warranty allow you to open up the machine to check hardware? If you are unsure of the answers to these questions, contact your system manufacturer. WARNING: The steps that follow can void your warranty!!!

For Part 3: If You Have Errors: If you swap any memory components, follow these steps for ESD safety:
      1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
      2. Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
      3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
      4. Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.

Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

    • Download and install CPU-Z and Upload screenshots of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs. In the SPD tab, upload an image of each slot.

I installed the drivers for the network controller, even though I only use the wlan card when I'm running Linux

I removed spybot and disabled verifier.

I ran the Memtest86+ for 17 hours and got 44 errors. I will be doing part 3 tonight and throughout the week.

Good plan to test modules/slots if you received any Memtest86+ errors. That indicates you have at least one bad module or slot.
