    Thanks for that writhziden.
I tried Unetbootin late yesterday, and got the same results. I removed the ei.cfg file and put it on USB.
    Same again problem:

"Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation"

I've made copies of the ISO file before I removed the ei.cfg file, so I have a (likely) good downloaded file...hopefully. It just took a very long time due to slow India d/l speeds!

So... as a final attempt, should I remove the ei.cfg file using 7-zip, then attempt to use Imgburn to put back on a USB...can you confirm that this is possible to use Imgburn to do this?

What other options do I have after this, just so I can prepare myself!

    Thanks again.

Download 7-zip, right click on the ISO, use the 7-zip options to extract here (to the same location the ISO is stored), remove the ei.cfg file from the sources directory, then use ImgBurn to create a new ISO using the Create image file from files/folders option. Make sure the layout of the ISO remains the same. Autorun should be in the root of the ISO. 7-zip will create a folder with all of the files contained within the folder, so you want to select the files within that folder, not the folder itself, when you create the image through ImgBurn.

    New and weird development:

The Imgburn approached failed, I managed to rebuild the ISO file and load it onto my USB stick. The exact same error messages popped up, so no luck there

I did something I haven't done and just walked away from the computer. I came back and the Windows Starting screen was up! Windows loaded as normal, very slowly, but it was a good feeling! I fired up a movie, and it worked straight up, then I fired up Photoshop to see if that would work too. It did, but again, very slowly. I was trying my best to push it to its limit and get a BSOD again like I had a month ago.

Nothing. Just veeerrry sllloowww. I open several files/documents/programs at once, and it took several minutes to all load up...then they all seemed to pop up at once. Very rarely a (Not Responding) error comes up, but it has happened.

I've taken the oppotuntiy now the machine boots to several things to try and find a problem and fix it!

    • I've run avast!, my antivirus software. It took 1:34 hours to test 56GB. All OK.
    • I ran a pre-boot up malware checker that fires up before Windows starts. All OK.
    • I ran CHKDSK on C:/, it stated "The volume is clean", then booted into Windows straight away.
    • Safe mode didn't load, it idled and restarted after a while.
    • The machine just totally froze while running CHKDSK on D:/, a 20gb partition, so I had to hard reset.
    • I ran a Memory check test too, that was OK as well.
    • There are 3 LED's on the laptop chassis, 1 seems to be blinking once in a while, the other 2 seem dead!

    • Now the 'Starting Windows' screen is frozen on screen, it's been there for 10minutes.

Now I'm at this stage, is there any other tests or repairs I can do now I can actually boot into Windows?
Could a hardware issue be to blame?

Latest Development Windows Boot Manager says this:
    ---
Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.

This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by fault hardware such as a hard drive or CD ROM drive than is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.

    Status:0xc00000e9
Info:An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

Thank you for being so patient guys, this is proving to be a mind-bender!
    Cheers

If you don't have any external devices connected to your computer it looks as though you have a faulty hard drive and/or a faulty CD-ROM drive.

You need to check that both are connected properly. If they are, disconnect the CD drive then restart your computer. If it still freezes you're likely to have a hard drive problem. If it doesn't freeze, reconnect the CD drive and restart. If the computer then freezes on startup you've isolated the problem to the CD drive.

However, at this stage, I'd be inclined to suspect the hard drive by virtue of the fact CHKDSK wouldn't run on your D drive. What do you have on that partition? Is it the recovery partition?

    Hi guys.
Back home in the UK now, with normal(ish) speed broadband so things should be a bit easier!

I'm going to run through the steps mentioned by Seavixen - Without sounding like a total numpty, will tinkering around in the workings of my laptop void any warranty I have? The machine is only 4 months old. I have an eSATA connector on the machine if his helps with anything.

I'm not 100% sure what I have on the partition. I don't think it's a recovery partition, it's called LENOVO, after the manufacturer. When I check with Lucid Puppy, there aren't many folders on the partition.

    Cheers everyone,
    Stu

When in doubt, always contact the warranty provider before proceeding with any steps and find out whether the steps will void the warranty. It is better to have problems like what you are experiencing troubleshooted by the warranty provider if possible.

    What the recovery partition volume?

Won't be many folders if it's a recovery partition.

    Hello everyone!

Thank you all so much for trying to help me with this problem I've had with my bloody laptop! I've contacted Lenovo now I'm back in the UK, and they've been really good about it all and have arranged a courier to collect my machine...stating that if they don't fix the problem within 10 days, they give me a new machine to the same or better value. Fingers crossed for a £2000 thinkpad eh?!

    Cheers for your help.

    All the best,
    Stu

Good luck! I'm sure you let Lenovo know that you've had 6 weeks of nightmare with their product, right?
