well, restoring defaults wasn't as easy as i would have thought... in a menu with eight tabs, it was under the last tab, the 'exit' tab. but it's done.

i have the event viewer open again, and i've expanded the app tab...

the only subheading there that has any events is antivirus, and those just report it was updated.

it looks from the manual like all i would have to do to overclock the ram is go to to this entry on the 'extreme tweaker' tab

In order for me to reach 4Ghz. I had to make a few changes. Many of the options are tied in to others so you have to understand this.

I have my multiplier at 20 and CPU Freq at 200. I upped my VCORE to 1.304 and my DRAM voltage to 1.63. Plus I disabled some other options.

And you have to watch your temps. I would go with something like 3 Ghz. to start.

You really need to know what you are doing especially when increasing voltages. BSOD's will happen if you overclock too high as will freezes and other weird things.

i really don't know if that was done before or not. i'm in mexico (incidentally) and our comp guy's english is so-so, and he may well have never had such a request before (we're in a small town). but since the ram was sold as a kit with the board, i figured it could be configured easily (or why sell that particular ram with the board?)

use CPU level Up and select i940 first if you must overclock. Read the manual and check the web for o/c advice on the 920.

i only really care about stability right now. what i mainly use is photoshop and corel painter, neither of which is capable of really using my system well right now - they only use one or 2 of the cpu's cores, and i hear they are only roughly patched up at the moment to run on a x64 system. painter 11 isn't even stable.

but my ram is 1600 mhz. shouldn't it run at that speed?

i mean, wouldn't that make it more stable, not less?

i guess the menu seems to imply that the board may have already adjusted it to 1600 mhz anyhow, since the only other option below 1600 is 'auto'.

1600+ is not offically supported. Most mobo manufacturers overcome this in their BIOS's and hardware. Using 1600 might also increase your CPU speed which would require a higher vcore and probably a higher dram voltage.
