Windows 7: bluescreen - twice

we have minidumps!
two!
one i missed sat night - i think i was playing mahjong with real temp open on top, which i could tell was glitchy, the sound was stuttery. i didn't get a blue screen, it just shut down. i thought it was a software thing related to real temp and forgot about it.
the second happened just now, while i was trying to use photoshop (i'd like to be able to work!). same bsod i now know and love.

here's the dumps...

i've changed timings to 7-7-7-24 from 7-7-7-20.
should i up voltage to 1.65 v?
that's the ram's spec. but i haven't because maybe that means changing other things, and my box is under-cooled.

Hate to say it but the most recent bsod is inconclusive.

fyi... In order to get a minidump you need a page file on your boot drive which is usually C:. Needs to be at least 64MB I think.

When you reset your BIOS to factory defaults did you get any BSOD'S. You need to insure that stock values are stable before even considering overclocking.

From the above, I suspect your memory. Please do not change the timings while we're testing here - if it is the memory it'll lead us on a merry chase!

Please test your memory with the diagnostic mentioned in my blog here: Bootable Memory Test Diagnostics - Vox
The second memory dump has several inconsistencies that can most easily be explained by memory issues.

You have a STOP 0x124 error and a STOP 0x101 error - IME this most often means that you've encountered an incompatibility on your system (although it can also be a hardware issue).

First, please carefully review the hardware and software that you installed before the BSOD's started.

Also, use this free tool to check your drivers (to see how old they are): BlueScreenView - View blue screen of death (STOP error) information. At times it's results differ from WinDbg - so I'd advise using it with caution. But the driver dates have proven accurate for me - so that'll tell you if anything is excessively old (2007 or earlier). FWIW - I didn't see anything old with my tools, so if you don't find anything don't worry about it.

Finally, run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to see if it can point out any incompatibilities on the system: Download details: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Beta[/QUOTE]

MP system within the allocated interval. This indicates that the specified
processor is hung and not processing interrupts.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000019, Clock interrupt time out interval in nominal clock ticks.
Arg2: 0000000000000000, 0.
Arg3: fffff88002f64180, The PRCB address of the hung processor.
Arg4: 0000000000000002, 0.

since apparently my comp guy never oc'ed anything, the only time BIOS was anything other than default was during my 10 min. experiment with 'memory up'. also, i have changed the timings to what ocz lists for my ram, i did that late last night. so, one bsod since then, after maybe 5 hours of use.

i run a memtest to 300% coverage and there were no errors. the version i used is from hcidesign, for vista. i want to test memory more, but want to wait until my cooling issues are resolved.

RAM SPEC: 1.65 V BIOS DIMM: 1.5 V

are you guys telling me that isn't significant?

(the previous memtest was making my cpu toasty. maybe i'm being finicky, but i want to avoid that.)

this is a new machine built from a combo kit i bought that included the 1600 mHz ram. i've been getting bsod's from the very beginning, first under vista, now with 7.

alright well, 1. i'll fix the cooling, that will take a week to get the parts.

2. i'll set the ram to what it was designed for. just possibly, the shop where i bought it online may be able to tell me something about that. if not, i'll use the memory up option in bios
3. i'll test the ram

well, it's been a rollicking adventure. except it wasn't so much rollicking as pounding your head with your fist. but i think everything is better now.

i have seen many forums, wandered many threads.

bottom line, it was indeed necessary to do an ever-so-slight overclock in order to make the system stable.
i obtained and installed cooling - coolermaster hyper tx3 for the cpu, coolermaster 120mm fan in the side of the case, covering the gpu, sb and nb. the 2 6cm fans that had been at the back of the case were redeployed, one on top of the nb, one on the dram. finally i also removed the 2-part heat sink for the nb and gave it new arctic silver thermal paste. i did the same for the sb while i was at it. the new paste on the nb actually lowered the temp at startup by 5c. the side of the case actually isn't on yet, because it has to be all cut up to accomodate the cpu heatsink and the 120mm fan.

after very extensive consultation, and many changes that failed to help, these are the bios setting changes that allowed me to run a full stability test in everest for an hour:

set 'memory up' instant overclock tool to 1600mHz
set 'ai overclock tuner' to manual
set QPI voltage to 1.325V
set DRAM bus voltage to 1.71V

the dram timings are 9-9-9-24, set by the memory up tool. the system is stable so i left them that way.

after that 1 hour test in everest, cpu was 59c, nb 62c, sb 49c. the dimms were just warm. the outside heat spreader on the last dimm was bordering on hot, but you could comfortably hold your finger on it.

i have not slept properly for 4 days. i tried to use the weekend to put this problem to rest, and am only now finding respite.
the info i got here about focusing on the ram as the issue put me on the road to finally finding this solution. sure, it's a bit of an overclock, but everything is cool, literally. i expect my equipment will last fine. so, thanks for everyone's help.
