Frequent BSOD ataport.sys

Hello,

I have had this HP G61 laptop since Jan 2010, and it came with Windows 7 64bit installed.

I have had fairly frequent (several times a day) and apparently random BSODs for the last month or so. I have had four different error messages - most often IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or DRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL, but in the last couple of days also DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, which names ataport.sys as being possibly to blame. The BSODs often happen within a few minutes of turning the computer on, but also at random other times later, with no noticeable correlation to what I'm doing. Also, whenever I try to run an Avast scan, it will get about 10 seconds in and then BSOD. When I was at home without internet access for a couple of weeks in the middle of this period, I did not experience any BSODs, but I don't know whether that's related. I'm not aware of having installed anything new or changed anything before this started.

This laptop was obviously upgraded from a previous OS. The crashes were primarily related to your Avast but a hug additional problem is about half the OS drivers are old and need to be updated.

How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

Avast can be a contributing cause of BSOD'S . Please remove and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST
