Primarily correct. There is the outside chance of Windows corruption to the DirectX installation.
I would recommend the video memory test in my previous post. It won't void the warranty and may yield worthwhile results. The other diagnostic tools are also fine.
If this is a custom built system, the only steps to avoid for the warranty are taking parts apart, i.e. removing the GPU fan/heatsink or taking the graphics card apart. Also, changing voltages can void the warranty for RAM and/or the CPU in some cases. If it is a vendor built system, taking apart the system in any way may void the warranty.
