    BSOD while browsing the internet

    System specs:
    Windows 7 pro x64
I think original system was mandriva linux, but I installed windows straight away
    full retail

I have the hardware and OS installed since July 2011

I've had several BSODs, but mostly they occurred at night while asleep. This time I was browsing the net and a BSOD appeared.

the hard disk does a lot of noise

    thanks in advance!

    Problematic Software:
    Code:
    Start Menu\Programs\Auslogics\Disk Defrag	Public:Start Menu\Programs\Auslogics\Disk Defrag	Public
    • I recommend against 3rd party defrag tools. Windows has some nice command line flags for the defrag command that will accomplish the same tasks as 3rd party programs. The -b and -w flags will defrag boot files and the boot registry items as well as compact the data to the center of the disk for faster access.
      defrag c: -b
      defrag -c -v -w
The first command optimizes boot performance for the Windows drive by defragmenting boot files and boot registry items.

The second command includes all drives on the system through the -c command and optimizes the drives by compacting the data to the center of the disk. Verbose output through the -v option is optional to provide the user with more information about the defrag tasks. The commands have to be run in an Elevated Command Prompt.

For more flags, see Disk Defragmenter - Open and Use.

It is difficult to find patterns with only one .dmp file. Please refrain from using CCleaner for the duration of your troubleshooting on here; it is likely the reason your other .dmp files are missing. CCleaner deletes the .dmp files as part of its cleanup process.

The one .dmp files indicates Windows as the cause of your crash which is unlikely. While unlikely, it is possible:

thanks, I ran sfc /scannow once and it reported no errors.
I forgot to say the hard drives are older than the system, the OS drive is about 2 years old and the second drive is older than that.

I'll take your advice concerning defrag

The bugcheck code would indicate you have a driver conflict somewhere.
    • An underlying driver may be incompatible\conflicting with your system. Run Driver Verifier to find any issues. To run Driver Verifier, do the following:
      a. Backup your system and user files
      b. Create a system restore point
      c. If you do not have a Windows 7 DVD, Create a system repair disc
      d. In Windows 7:
      • Click the Start Menu
      • Type verifier in Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
      • Right click verifier and click Run as administrator
      • Put a tick in Create custom settings (for code developers) and click next
      • Put a tick in Select individual settings from a full list and click next
      • Set up the individual settings as in the image and click next
        Attachment 214384
      • Put a tick in Select driver names from a list
      • Put a tick next to all non-Microsoft drivers.
      • Click Finish.
      • Restart your computer.

If Windows cannot start in normal mode with driver verifier running, start in safe mode. If it cannot start in safe mode or normal mode, restore the system restore point using System Restore OPTION TWO.

Thanks to zigzag3143 for contributing to the Verifier steps.
If you are unable to start Windows with all drivers being verified or if the blue screen crashes fail to create .dmp files, run them in groups of 5 or 10 until you find a group that causes blue screen crashes and stores the blue screen .dmp files.
The idea with Verifier is to cause the system to crash, so do the things you normally do that cause crashes. After you have a few crashes, upload the crash reports for us to take a look and try to find patterns.

When you are ready to disable Verifier: Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click Command Prompt -> Run as administrator -> Type the following command and then Enter:
      verifier /reset
      -> Restart your computer.

Try to run Verifier for at least 24 hours and up to 36 hours before providing your crash reports. Remember not to run any file cleaners, especially CCleaner.
