DXGI.DLL error related to Windows Live Movie Maker

I was using Windows Live Movie Maker and working on a tribute to my sister who passed. I decided (wrong thing to do) to update and downloaded Windows Live Essentials (because there was a newer update of Movie Maker). Then, movie maker would not start up. Reinstalled several times. Then I read somewhere about DXDIAG. Then tried dxdiag in Run command.

    THIS is the error message:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dxgi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact yoru system administrator or the software vendor for support.

After I press ok, I get another message saying:

    Error: Could not load dxdiagn.dll

Not sure what to do My goal is to continue working on my video tribute. I uninstalled Windows Live Essentials. Tried to reinstall DIRECTX, states I have the latest version. I used several scans (SFC/scannow and others for malware).

I have an ACER Aspire 1430z-4677, Windows Home Premium (64).

Next step is (IMO) a repair install: Repair Install

If you care to mess with DLL replacements (I don't and don't have any idea of how to do it), I've uploaded a zip of my copy of dxgi.dll. My system is Win7 SP1 64 bit.

Hi, not sure if you got my last message. I am going to try and do a REPAIR INSTALL tonight or tomorrow night. I read somewhere to save drivers (sorry to say I don't know the steps to do such). Is that necessary??? I have all my files backed up.

My other question is that you are pretty confident that this will work so I ask should I give up on WLMM? I don't want to download and install the whole program (Windows LIve Essentials). Where can I download the Movie Maker program only from?

    THANKS SO MUCH.

When you install Windows Live Essentials, you have the option to install only specific aspects of the program.

As for backing up your drivers, you can backup the install tools, but I think it best that you just install and let Windows find the appropriate drivers. If after Windows installs the drivers you have any missing drivers, we can help you track them down.

Thank you for the response. I don't remember seeing an option on WLE to only install the WLMM.

    Attachment 215325

The second option there says "Choose the programs you want to install"

Then you can choose to update programs already installed which includes WLMM

No I didn't do the REPAIR INSTALL as of yet. Hopefully tomorrow night or Thursday.

Just preparing ahead with my questions. I think the WLE download where I thought it would be better to get the latest version started all my problems. I just hope my PROJECT can work with WLMM 2011 (I don't think my project was done with that version).

I just reread you question. I thought you were asking if I had done the repair install. Are you asking if I have Windows 7 SP1? I have Windows 7 but how do I know if it is with SP1 OR without SP1

From the Control Panel, click on System.
