    Constant blue screens/hard resets

    Hi all,

I'd say about once a day my machine freezes momentarily and then hard-resets itself. I'm not a computer novice, but this one has me stumped. I've attached the required docs.

The computer is an HP Envy 14 from about a year ago. I did a clean Win7 Pro install on it from a full retail version I have. I've also added an SSD and removed the optical and put an HDD in its space.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The driver in red needs to be updated from your HP Support site.

The driver in blue is associated with a USB device.

Many of your crashes were USB related. For the USB problems...
    • What USB devices do you own? Please provide a list of devices even if you do not always use them.

    • Start with USB Driver - General Fix for Problems to resolve the USB issues. Also, USB ports can sometimes enter a safe power state to protect the system from power surges due to USB devices. To reset the USB ports to a nominal power state:
      1. Shut down and turn off the computer.
      2. Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
      3. "Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
      4. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
      5. (If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
      6. Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

Thanks. Ok, I'll update that realtek driver.

On the other one, it looks like a ctirix file. I use citrix to login into my work environment, could that be the issue?

I use almost zero usb devices. Is it possible that the internal mic (the one in the screen) is connected via usb at some level? Because I get USB disconnect/connect noises when i open the lid often and the mic is the device that seems to come and go? Any leads here?

The citrix could be the issue; is it a USB device?

Yes, the internal mic could be considered a USB device. Sounds like you have a loose connection within the laptop. If so, you may need to get it serviced. You should do the steps I outlined first and see if you can isolate it to the mic before worrying about it. What I mean by isolating it to the mic is we should do other troubleshooting steps first to rule other causes out.

Yeah, I'm going one step at a time. Have reinstalled the network driver, and am waiting for another crash.

The Citrix is not a USB device but may have some drivers to allow usb devices I plug in to work when I VPN in? I'll try to uninstall this at some point and see what happens.

Question: Do you think that disabling the USB mic would work if that ends up being the issue?

Thanks very much, your time is greatly appreciated.

Ah, yes, it could be Citrix allows for USB interaction across the VPN. Look into the VPN software if you still have problems after the network driver re-install. And if you still have problems after those two steps, disabling the mouse is a good troubleshooting step to test. You should also go through the USB steps in my previous post.

Just wanted to follow up here.

Turned out to have nothing to do with Citrix but instead our other hunch, the microphone and webcam integrated into the screen. I opened up my entire laptop and took the screen off the hinges then took the screen out of its casing and indeed, behind the screen the connector for the mic/webcam was disconnected. I popped it back in and all was well. Thanks for the help, the point about it being a USB device issue is what helped figure it out.

    Thanks again!
