    Windows installer keeps crashing

I'm trying to install Fallout 3 and I keep getting a Windows Installer crash. Anyone else have this problem?

    what have you installed here???
    (include all software and drivers)
windows 7 is particulary sensitive to software installations

by my thoughts you should have a 0x000005 in faulty module ntdll.exe in event viewer...

    Hi Firestrider,

Check out the solution at the bottom of this page

Windows Installer Crash : Windows 7 Miscellaneous : Windows 7 Beta : Microsoft TechNet Forums

    start regedit
    navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
    rename MachineThrottling to _MachineThrottling

    Hope it helps

Thanks for the help. I decided on doing a system restore to the installation date and that seemed to fix the problem. Do you think CCleaner got rid of a necessary registry value?

    Hi Firestrider,

I don't think it was Ccleaner as it seems some have this problem who have not used Ccleaner.

Having said that , I do not use ccleaner reg clean module on 7 as it finds a huge number of entries. It seems fine on Vista though.

Personally I use the reg clean option on the free Glaryutilities - it is quite gentle and I have never had any problems with - also, it automatically makes a backup.

I do not recommend registry cleaning as it can lead to problems.

If you decide not to use the reg clean module, it is still a good app. with lots of great modules.

    Hope it helps

actually this is a more definite solution and tells you why....

Many users have started experiencing random crashing of explorer and msiexec.exe when trying to start Windows Update or install anything that uses an MSI based installer. This issue is bad enough that some people have even formatted because of it, only to have it come back again.
Rafael has discovered that the fault lies with the SQM Client which is part of the Customer Experience Improvement Program. It seems that ANY process that calls WinSqmStartSession in ntdll.dll will start crashing when MachineThrottling is enabled in the registry, which seems to happen as a result of CEIP running.
There are two workarounds for this issue. One may only be temporary, while the other should be permanent. I will list the permanent method here so everyone can cure the issue once and for all.

    1. Delete the string values (Except for (Default)) in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
    2. Start gpedit.msc
    3. Expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand System, expand Internet Communication Management, and then click Internet Communication settings.
    4. In the details pane, double-click Turn off Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program, and then click Enabled.

Yes, doing the above WILL disable the anonymous usage data (CEIP), but until Microsoft fixes the issue and issues a hotfix or a new build I don’t see any other options to ensure the issue does not occur again.

Now that you mention it, I'm also having trouble with this and additionally uninstalling programs. Seems to work on and off and for me stopping the install and rebooting seems to fix it.
Thanks for the post I'll have read and see if I cant sus this out
