propsys.dll error

Hi all,

I have a pc running Windows 7 Pro and in the last couple of days have started receiving propsys.dll error messages on startup and also when opening applications. The computer boots fine and runs OK but just keep getting the error windows appearing. The only thing that I can see that is not working is I have no sound when playing games, cd's or online media etc. However, the speakers test OK and device manager shows all audio drivers/devices are working correctly?

My son uses the pc to play COD and RFactor online so I am assuming the fault could stem from this? The only new application (that I am aware of!) that has been loaded to the pc recently is Skype which my son installed a couple of weeks back.

To try and rectify the problem I looked at rolling back to a restore point but unfortunately the latest restore point was after this issue started.

I have AVG (Free) running but when trying to run a system scan, it shuts down the app with an error message which suggested to me a virus. Therefore, I ran McAfee Stinger and Spybot successfully and neither of the programs found anything nasty. I also ran the online Microsoft full system scan and this didn't find anything either.

I have googled the issue and found many others out there having the same problem. I considered downloading a new version of the propsys.dll file and installing but several articles I read advised against doing this. I have the original Win 7 OS disk but was reluctant to run this as I am not sure if it has a 'repair' option?

I have seen on the Microsoft that you can create a bootable repair disk to run but this sounds like a drastic step to take and really not sure if this would fix the problem?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Regards,

What's the exact error message? Did the loss of audio start when this error message started?

Thanks for the quick response Kegobeer, I am away from my PC at the moment but the error message was along the lines of the following. I can post the exact error message later today:

<application>.exe - Unable to locate component. This application has failed to load because PROPSYS.DLL was either damaged or not found

The 'no sound' problem started the same time as the error messages began appearing.

Thks,

First, are you certain you are virus and malware free? I would download Microsoft Defender Offline, install it to a CD/DVD or bootable flash drive, and let it do a scan. Always best to make sure you are clean before moving to the next step.

Then, open an elevated command prompt and type SFC /SCANNOW, then reboot the computer and let it scan for and hopefully fix missing or damaged files. If files are found, repeat the command until there are no more files fixed.

Here's the link to WDO.

What is Windows Defender Offline?

Hey KegoBeer,

I ran the WDO and it found two Trojans which I have deleted:

Trojan Downloader: Win32/Dofoil.A
Trojan Dropper: Win32/Oficla.G

I then ran command prompt SFC /SCANNOW four times and each returned the same error message:
'Scan detected damaged files but was unable to restore them, see CBS log for fault details'

I couldn't attach the CBS error log here for some reason and it is way too long to paste in the body of this thread.

Post the CBS log to a file sharing site and post the link. We can take a look at the log and get back to you.

I would also run WDO again and make sure you are virus free.
