Random Hang [no clue]

Hey there,

It's my first time here on this forum, and I must say, a big THANKS for all those who read this. :)

Alright, here is the breakdown of my computer. I have an Asus G73 XN1 gaming laptop running an Intel i7 740QM with 8GB RAM, 500GB hard-drive, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M; Its also running Windows 7 Ultimate (64x).

One day it just randomly hung up. no visible BSOD, it just hangs... nothing responds, no movement; NOTHING. Ctrl + Alt + Del doesnt do anything, and the only way to get it off is press and hold the power and force it off...

I haven't gotten any error messages, and I'm honestly not sure what can be done (short of a complete HD wipe)

HELP!?

Have you checked your event logs?

i had forgotten that I was a member here lolz :) And I will fill that out, but in the link provided was my EXACT specs (aside from the upgrade to windows 7 ultimate ) and how to i check my event logs?

Make sure you put the model number in there; right now it just says Asus. That will help people when they stop by the thread, they can just click on the specs link in your post.

To access the event logs, hit your Windows key and type event. The first application listed should be Event Viewer. Once you run it, you can look at a bunch of different types of logs. I would start with the system log and look for the last time there was an uncommanded restart, then backtrack a bit and see if there is anything that catches your eye that might be related to the problem. After you're done, move to the other logs and look for problems.

i updated my specs, and that should help, and when viewing the logs, what am i really looking for? I can write JAVA code, but when it comes to this; its like brain surgery! lol

Find where the restart happened, then look backwards for error messages, programs that stop responding, etc.

I'm starting to wonder if the issue might have to be the *attempted* overclocking that was tried a few months ago. not sure if that is a culprit... could be don't know how to undo any of the damage or settings that were done... my temps don't run more than 40c at most....

according to my event list (viewing my critical errors) it started back in march, and thats about when i was fiddling with overclocking and so on
