Its the USB, confirmed by my results and the title of your post. This is where the problem lies.
Take your computer off power save.
Put it on full performance

P.S: Just curious to know. Is there any other alternatives other than choosing the full performance mode. The link mentions that battery life will take a hit. With an already degrading battery, I'm open to considering other options to side step this issue.
We dont have to do anything forever. Do everything as a test. If the problem is solved its up to you want you want to do with the information.
Even the less than up to stardards battery could be the cause. Try to use the computer high performance plugged in, for a while; again we have to test to find the cause.
