Windows 7: Explorer "Not Responding"; Freezes Up

Thanks everyone for your help.

I did use Avanquest System Suite 9 Pro's registry cleaner - however, it modified some settings in my registry that killed Explorer. (Fixed it .. found a registry fix for that issue somewhere.)

I left AVG off for a while, then reinstalled it ... then uninstalled it. I'm not 100% convinced it was AVG, as the second time I ran it it wasn't quite as bad as before ...still had problems, though. Now, without AVG for a few days, things seem to be running nicely.

For AV I'm using the beta of Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...ad-131683.html), the replacement to Live OneCare.

The desperate search for a solution brought up this old thread... re. the last post, I'm already running MSE (way past the beta now of course) but I've got the 'explorer not responding' issue for a few weeks now.
Although there are lots of posts here, my usual source of solutions 'VirtualDr' don't seems to have heard of this issue - I thought it was just me for a while... until I googled

Clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Also running PC Tools Firewall and Spysweeper.

It keeps reporting the problem to Microsoft but nothing back yet. I read somewhere about switching off 'protected mode' in IE8 but I don't think that's done anything and I uninstalled Super Anti Spyware as it was mentioned in one of the event logs.

Any progress with this issue??

Thanks,

I Fixed It

I fixed the problem by removing references to certain network drives in Windows Explorer. I had listings pointing to Web sites I had worked on using MS Frontpage, and an entry for MSN Web Sites for some reason...I had never used that service, but some program put it there during an install.

This is apparently a known bug; at least, known to non-MS people, though evidently MS itself doesn't know or care to know.

Thanks for that Peterwk, but can I ask for more information...
How do I go about doing what you did and what should I be removing, or how will I know what to remove? Make it as simple as you can please!!

Thanks,

Can't Quite Remember!

Sorry, I can't remember exactly what I did. In general terms ...

Look for these extra items in Windows Explorer; look for references to external "drives" that don't really exist, such as FrontPage Web sites and MSN Web sites.
Right-click on them ...
Delete them

I also stopped using Windows Explorer ... I now use Directory Opus, a much better file manager, that also seems to be more stable. GPSoftware Main Index

A colleague of mine using the 64bit version of Windows 7 Enterprise has been having this problem for the past day or so. No matter what program he's using, as soon as he clicks print, the program stops responding. This even happens if you try to print a test page - Windows Explorer stops...

Win7 "Not Responding" freezes on every software
