Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Installer Problems

I built this computer Dec 11, and have had consistant installer issues from day one. Installing or removing programs hangs/takes forever or doesn't work at all. I don't get any error messages. It just hangs forever. Sometimes, if I go to bed on it, it will be complete in the morning. On the first Windows OS install, once I got the install probs, I just did another clean install. It didn't change a thing.

Sometimes, thru the past, I've just ignored the errors, and simply tried to get along without some of the programs I've wanted to install. But now, Windows Updates aren't installing either, and the persistant messages and restart prompts are driving me crazy.

Where in the heck do I start? I've run Microsoft's fixit for install errors, No Joy. I've run every diagnostic/fix imaginable, and it still bombs.

    Welcome aboard, deadfish86.

► During installation, windows use the RAM for the purpose. If it is getting slow, it might be that your RAMs are not working rightly. Do check your RAM sticks:
    RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run it at lease for 8 passes. Preferably run it overnight, one by one- for all the sticks.

► And, see if resetting windows update solves your update issue or not.
    Windows Update - Reset

    Let us know the results.

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Installer Problems

    Thanks Arc,

    >I ran memtest while I was gone to work today. 8+ passes with no errors. I didn't know how to save a screenshot, but if you want it, I did just take a photo of the screen.

    Things to note

Update failures started immediately after update:
    • Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - August 2012 (KB890830)
    • Installation date: ‎8/‎16/‎2012 9:59 PM
    • Installation status: Successful
Over the weekend, I was able to get a few updates to succeed by selecting them one at a time, and then running. Each one took an inordinate amount of time to complete.

    >After memtest I ran: "Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat". On reboot, my machine didn't try to install any updates; either on shutdown or on restart. Usually the updates that try to run on shutdown take a very long time, and the ones that try to run on startup only take a few seconds before failure, reverting changes, and then automatic restart.

    >Going back into control panel's main Windows Update page, 5 important updates were still waiting, so I selected them all and said go. Creating restore point took 10 mins, and successful install of all 5 updates took 11 more, for a total of 21 mins. I kinda think this may still be pretty slow.

Thank you so much for your help, I guess now I just need to figure out why other software doesn't want to install or uninstall sometimes. I still can't help but think the slowness of Windows Installer or the related processes had something to do with this.

Another note - there are no restore points available on my computer except for the one created on the day I loaded the OS.

I note you have a SSD in your specs. Can you please describe how you have installed/reinstalled w7 and what media you used?

    Britton30,

Clean install from optical disk the first time, Layout=Simple, Type=Basic, File System=NTFS, System Reserved=100 MB NTFS, and OS=111.69 GB NTFS.

Started loading the other software and after a while an install hung the computer so badly I couldn't install or uninstall anything, even after a power-off restart.

So another clean install from the CD again, not a repair install.

    Hi,

Its not clear to me whether, after the initial Windows 7 installation, you then let Windows update fully. If not, I recommend that in preference to installing other software immediately.

I spoke too soon on the success of those last five updates. Even though my message on the initial run said success, and Update history said "pending"; on the restart, I got a msg that said it failed to configure the updates. Update history status on those updates is now "failed".

I got a little further this time than before...

Have you created any other accounts?
Did you install the entire OS to the SSD?

No other accounts. I've only enabled the normally hidden "administrator" account in the past couple of days hoping it would allow me to do some work my normal user account (which is an admin acct) wouldn't.

Entire OS is on the SSD, which wasn't connected when I installed the OS - best I can remember.

    Thank You Guys!!!
