    Error after a windows critical update

    Hi, I am new here so please bare with me.

    It seems that a few days ago Windows completed a "critical" update and since then when I boot the computer up I get the famous blue screen but when I start the computer in safe mode its fine but I have to restore the computer back to an earlier date. It runs fine after I've done this but when I shut the computer down and turn it back on the blue screen comes up again and I have to go through the same thing and go back to an earlier restore point.

    Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? Many thanks.

    Welcome aboard.

    What does the blue screen say? Can you post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions?

    Partially, but not completely.
    The dump you have supplied shows a Bugcheck D1, which is obviously caused by a device driver. Let us see if we can find one or not.
    Code:
    .....
    *******************************************************************************
    *                                                                             *
    *                        Bugcheck Analysis                                    *
    *                                                                             *
    *******************************************************************************

    Use !analyze -v to get detailed debugging information.

    BugCheck D1, {10, 2, 0, fffff8800164f5d6}

    Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\athrx.sys, Win32 error 0n2
    *** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for athrx.sys
    *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for athrx.sys
    Probably caused by : athrx.sys ( athrx+4c0c7 )

    Followup: MachineOwner
    ---------
    So, we have got one. It is Atheros network adapter driver. Now, let us check how old the driver is.
    Code:
    0: kd> lmvm athrx
    start             end                 module name
    fffff880`04602000 fffff880`04771000   athrx    T (no symbols)
        Loaded symbol image file: athrx.sys
        Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\athrx.sys
        Image name: athrx.sys
        Timestamp:        Thu Jul 09 06:19:13 2009 (4A553E89)
        CheckSum:         0016D79F
        ImageSize:        0016F000
        Translations:     0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4
    That means, it is somehow old, of July 2009.

    First, you try to update this driver. Download the latest one from ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows (Atheros?????).
    Then: reinstall the driver:

    1. Click the Start Button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Start Menu Search box and press Enter.
    2. Double click to expand "Network adaptors".
    3. Right click your network card and click Uninstall.
    4. Check "Delete driver software for this device" check box, click OK.
    5. Restart the computer
    6. If windows does not auto configure the appropriate drivers at startup, install the downloaded one manually.

    Let us know how it went.

    But, if you supplied the MSINFO32 file and the Eventsys file, we would be able to get more info about the crashes and could provide a better support.

    Remember it for the next time, follow all the steps of the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

    First, look at your BIOS:
    Code:
    BIOS Version/Date      American Megatrends Inc. R1120Y4, 20/08/2009

    Much older. Try to update it. If it it a real problem to update it, let it be.

    Update those Drivers:

    ► Uninstall the programs:

    Remove start programs.

    1. Click on the start button
    2. Type in “msconfig” without quotes, hit enter. The system configuration window will open.
    3. Go to the startup tab
    4. Uncheck everything other than the antivirus. (MSE now, forget McAfee)
    5. Apply, OK, and exit.

    Let us know how things went.
