Black screen with cursor on startup

When I start my computer, the windows logo animation happens, and then it goes to a black screen with a cursor in the middle. I have done startup repair a few times, and the first time it did something, but now when I try it says there there are no problems. I cannot start it in safe mode either. Also I was able to recover some files on the hard drive using a Ubuntu Live CD. I have an ASUS A53S laptop running Windows 7 Premium.

OK, seems that you have chosen the external display. Press n Hold the Fn key with the F key that is showing the 2 screens. This should bring you back to your desktop.

Thanks for responding. When I do that the screen just flashes and returns to the black screen with the cursor.

i dont see how you cant get into safe mode, F8 before the windows Logo. If you want too reinstall Windows F11 or F12 does the trick!
