BSOD after idling, error 0x1000007e driver atikmdag.sys

Recently upgraded my computer and did a clean install of windows 7. Current system specs are:

    i5 3570k
    noctua nh-u12p se2 cooler
    gigabyte z77x-ud3h
    16gb samsung 30 nm 1600 ram
    silverstone strider plus 850w psu
    samsung 830 256gb ssd
    2x640gb caviar black raid 0

I recently purchased a gigabyte 7950 as well and that is the card I have been using with this build. I have not begun to overclock as I wanted to make sure the system ran fine at stock. I decided to begin overclocking the gpu and noticed no problems beyond the usual system crash after reaching the limit at stock voltage which I then bumped up. No problems really from the overclocking as far as I could tell. I was even stable in heaven and bf3 for a good hour. However, after letting the computer idle (and I assume go to sleep as I have that set after 30 mins), I came back to find the system non responsive and having to manually power cycle it. After logging back into windows, I was greeted with a check for resolution of the issue when I then discovered a BSOD had occurred. I assumed it was due to the overclock so I set it back to stock and noticed the same error after letting it idle again while I grabbed a bite to eat. After checking the minidump folder though, I learned that this had actually occurred a couple times prior to even beginning overclocking, so I assume that is not the issue.

I have run memtest for 3 hours and no errors were reported in that time frame. I have run prime95 for 30 mins and the cpu does not seem to have a problem. From the driver issue reported by BlueScreenViewer, it appears to be either the gpu or the associated driver. I initially had 12.10 (the latest stable driver), and then switched to the later 12.11 beta. Both displayed the same issue. I have since switched over to the integrated graphics on the cpu and have not noticed any issues (without uninstalling the amd display driver).

Additionally, as for my motherboard, I had an issue after running memtest. After stopping it and trying to boot back in to windows, I was greeted with a reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media. The only thing I had done was to switch boot priority of the cd drive to number 1 so I could load memtest. I changed it back to my ssd and still the problem persisted. I then unplugged all other drives and the problem continued. Finally switched to my backup bios and it worked. Switched back to my main bios and hit clear cmos and the problem was fixed. Any idea on what the problem might have been here also? Thanks.

Well, I put the 7950 back in and disabled sleep mode. Again after leaving the computer at idle for a bit, it ended up crashing as I came back an hour later to find it with the tower still on and running yet no signal to the monitor forcing me to power cycle it. Any thoughts?

So I decided to plug my psu pci-e cables directly into the gpu as opposed to using some nzxt extensions for better cable management. Same problem. However, I got a slightly different error code this time around:

    0x0000003b

BSV says it is caused by the same driver, however, now it is also mentions

    ntoskrnl.exe

    as the crash address.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I ended up replacing the card with another one and using the same drivers, it seemed to fix the problem. I was able to leave computer running all night with sleep disabled and no BSOD in the morning. However, I just found another BSOD. This time, it only refers to the the ntoskrnl.exe and gives a BCC of 0x1000009f with a string of DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. Any idea on the problems?

I updated my first post with the new logs as well.

Looks like VIA Labs eXtensible Host Controller driver is contributing in the crashes.

Click on the Start ► Control Panel ► Programs ► Uninstall a program ► Uninstall everything related to; VIA Labs eXtensible. Delete remnants of its drivers/older drivers using Driver Fusion/Sweeper REBOOT

Look for possible driver updates by searching in Google or from the manufacturers website. Driver Reference Table

Check if enabling/disabling USB selective suspense helps:

    Uninstall these:
    Code:
    Start Menu	Default:Start Menu	Default
    Start Menu\Programs\Spybot - Search & Destroy	Public:Start Menu\Programs\Spybot - Search & Destroy	Public
    Start Menu\Programs\SpywareBlaster	Public:Start Menu\Programs\SpywareBlaster	Public
Keep the free version of MBAM instead. (Do not start the free trial, deselect that option when prompted)

Run the System File Checker that scans the of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible:

Run Disk Check on your hard disk for file system errors and bad sectors on it:

Free up the start-up, nothing except the antivirus is usually needed.

Let us know if it helps.

    Thanks for the reply!

My main question is, 4 of my backpanel usb ports are usb 3.0 controlled by VIA. Additionally, my onboard sound is through VIA. The only thing VIA related in uninstall is the VIA platform device manager which takes me to an uninstall for the audio codec. Is this a problem as well? The only thing I am seeing with extensible host controller in the name under uninstall programs is for the intel usb 3.0 ports.

The drivers for the usb 3.0 ports for both intel and via were downloaded straight from the manufacturer page of my mobo and appear to be the most recent drivers available. Any clarification you can give?

I will try the usb selective suspension though and see how that works.

Also, is this what is coming up as the latest problem? Was the graphics card the problem associated with earlier bsods since changing it out seemed to fix the main problem.

    Thanks again.

Can you update your System Specs?

Are all your BIOS settings at default?

Have you updated all the motherboard drivers from their support site?
    Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
Leave the VIA devices for now, just update the drivers.

All the crashes prior to the new graphics card were blamed on the ATI driver, what driver version are you using?
This may need to be changed to an newer/older version, it's very common for certain graphics drivers to be problematic, sometimes you just need to try a few different ones before you get one to work for you.

Your System Event Logs start at 2009, was the computer date wrong when you first installed W7?

The system specs are as I posted at the start? Not quite sure what you mean? (Edit: nvm, updated)

BIOS settings are all at default. Only thing I had to change was from AHCI to RAID for my storage raid array to work.

All drivers were downloaded and installed from the support page for my mobo that you linked.

With the old card installed (7950), I attempted to use both 12.10 (latest stable) and 12.11 (beta). Both resulted in crashes. I left 12.11 and installed the 7970 and that fixed the initial crashes I was experiencing so I attributed the problem to my 7950 and am receiving a replacement. I could have tried older drivers but I had another card so after trying the new card and seeing no problem, I assumed it was hardware level.

As for computer date, I think it was fine. I had to change some time settings during the initial install, but it was only installed about a week ago.

I have no usb flash drives installed and never have. Only usb devices I have attached to the back panel are my mouse, keyboard power for leds, and my monitor usb ports. Beyond that, nothing else has been used.

I have not overclocked my cpu or ram at all yet but did a little gpu overclocking (though as I said, that was with the old gpu and I noticed that BSODs had occurred before the overclocking as well). I have run memtest for 2 passes with no error. I have run prime95 for a good 45 mins without a problem. Temps are fine and never exceeded 60 C on the hottest core. I have a very impressive aftermarket heat sink so I don't see how that could be the problem. Also, these bsods never happened while stress testing or gaming, only while the system was at idle!

And as for itunes, I do not have that or any apple product installed on my computer? Are you sure that is the cause?

    EDIT:

Koolkat, going back to what you said, I see the VIA USB eXtensible Host Controller under device manager. Additionally, there is a VIA USB 3 Root Hub. Then there is VIA USB 3 Hub and VIA USB 2 MTT HUB.

Updating your specs saves us from hunting through the thread to find them.

Graphics drivers are known to cause problems and sometime several version older drivers are needed for system stability, this is the same for both brands of cards.
I don't recommend using beta drivers, sometimes they are incomplete and just for testing the driver, meaning they expect them to crash and want feedback from beta testing volunteers.
Re-install the latest non-beta version while we are testing.

I saw what looked like a memory card reader, do you have one?
If not then that indicates another issue.
This might be due to something with the VIA driver for USB Hub.

When testing RAM, you need to run memtest86+ for a minimum of 7 full passes, it runs different tests with each pass.
With 16GB it will take 8 hours or more, best to run overnight.

You're getting a lot of CPU errors that are usually, but not always, an indication of CPU overheating.

You are getting a lot of errors with IDriver.exe, do you have any of the programs listed below?
It may/may not be the cause of your crashes, might need to be looked at later if nothing else is found.
The process known as InstallDriver Module

belongs to software InstallDriver Module or iTunes or InstallShield or QuickTime or iPod for Windows (version 2006-01-10, 2005-11-17, 2006-06-28) or O2Micro Smartcard Driver or Quicken (version 2005) or VIA Integrated Setup Wizard

by Macrovision (Digital Entertainment Technology Leader - Digital Content Management and Discovery - Rovi) or InstallShield Software (InstallShield).

Description: The file IDriver.exe is located in a subfolder of "C:\Program Files\Common Files". Known file sizes on Windows 7/XP are 761,856 bytes (28% of all occurrences), 778,240 bytes and 6 more variants.
IDriver.exe is not a Windows system file. The program is not visible. Therefore the technical security rating is 41% dangerous, however also read the users reviews.
If you have any problems with IDriver.exe, you may also uninstall the associated program (Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > iTunes or QuickTime).
    Tests to run:
    1) memtest86+ for 7 full passes.
    RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Leave all RAM cards installed for the first test, if you get any errors you can stop the test.
    One error is too many.

    2) Run the CPU test for minimum 30 minutes, this should be long enough to give us information.
    OCCT stability checking tool
Run the CPU:OCCT test for at least 30 minutes, be sure to monitor your CPU and GPU temps.
Set the time before you start, leave the idle times as they are for before and after the test runs.
When its done, pass or fail, it will make some graphs. Post these here as they are useful for analyses.

    3) Can you download CPUZ and post a snip of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs.
For posting the information , enter 'Snipping tool' in the Start button > Search box, hit enter. Select the area you want to post and save to a convenient place.
How to Post a Screenshot in Seven Forums
Go to your BIOS and tell us what the CPU, RAM and the CPU integrated memory controller voltages are.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what you meant about updating my specs as they were the latest ones in my original post. I then realized there was a signature system specs that I had filled out awhile back. Wasn't aware of it since it is not shown by default. Sorry about that.

As for the gpu driver, I guess the point I am making is, using 12.10 and 12.11 beta with the initial gpu, I saw that initial set of BSODS whenever the system was left at idle. Changing to a different gpu stopped those continual BSODs. Does that not suggest a problem with the original gpu? I realize it is not optimal to use beta drivers, but I saw the BSODs still with the original gpu but not after changing it out. If I had still seen them, then I was going to go try some older drivers. You said the old crashes were caused by the ATI driver. Could they have been associated with the actual gpu itself cause that is the only thing that seems to make sense to me given these circumstances I laid out here.

As for a memory card reader, I do have one. Sorry about that. I also have one that is integrated into my monitor (though not as comprehensive). I never installed a driver for the memory card reader either, only what I assume windows installed itself. I have not tested that it is even working at the moment.

As for the iDriver.exe, it says it is possibly associated with VIA Integrated Setup Wizard which I assume is the cause. This then corresponds back to the VIA USB ports you mentioned or is it completely unrelated when you had mentioned the two previously?

Not liking the sound of the CPU errors (and a lot of them at that). Is this a similar trend with the newer ivy bridge cpus as well. And how are you determining this? Again, when these BSODs are happening, I am not even on the computer, so it makes no sense that something would be overheating considering when I stress tested in prime95, 60 C was the max temp. Idle temps have been under 30 C when I have checked.

I will test the memory overnight as you suggest for the longer amount of time. I will test using OCCT tomorrow as well. I will also get the rest of the info you have requested in #3.

Thanks for the help. Definitely appreciate it!!!
