    Computer BSOD's When it Realizes It's Alone


    This is going to sound weird, but my computer bluescreens 98% of the time when i'm either gone or not looking at it. I recently got a new graphics card, but i was using the card for around a week before i started noticing this. Anybody who goes through the minidumps will probably find the reasons for some of the earlier crashes, like VMWare and whatnot, but more recently, every time i leave my computer unattended for more than a couple minutes, it will crash. Upon analyzing the minidumps, all the information i've gleaned from them is pretty much the same, something about VISTA_DRIVER_FAULT, there's never a faulting process directly stated. I can sit and play games and use my computer all day without a crash, but when i leave the thing unattended for any amount of time, it usually crashes. I certainly hope anybody reading this will be able to get more information from the minidumps than myself. Thanks in advance

    Anyway, most of your .dmps are showing errors with Avast! antivirus.

    Please uninstall Avast! antivirus and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials (To test)
    Run the System File Checker that scans the of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible:

    Run Disk Check on your hard disk for file system errors and bad sectors on it:

    Got rid of Avast, Security essentials is updating right now, and the system scan returned all clear. Do you think there was something wrong with Avast? or did my PC just not agree with it? I'll run chkdsk now and see if there's anything wrong. I have a newer 1TB HDD and my first HDD is only 80Gigs. I would take it out but that's the drive GRUB is on and I don't feel like fixing all that. Linux is kind of my fallback, because windows has had a nasty history of not working properly on this system.

    EDIT: dskchk returned all clear, Security essentials are installing updates. Thanks for your help, and i guess i'll post back here in the event that i get more crashes like this.

    I'm not sure but Avast! does sometimes contribute in BSOD-s. Was it the latest version of Avast!?

    Is windows installed on the 1TB HDD or..?

    As far as i can tell i was using the latest version of Avast. Windows is installed on the bigger drive, i barely even use the smaller one anymore, i think it is also loaded with windows though. The hard drives in my computer are all messed up, the smaller one has windows 7 and GRUB, but linux and the main installation of windows 7 are on the big drive.

    You may continue to monitor for crashes (keeping your eye off the PC) and update your thread when you see it

    Also, this reminds me of the problem my computer was having. Some scientists figured out that if they stare directly at a certain isotope of Uranium, it will stop decaying, but it begins again when they look away
