    BSOD hal.dll, ntoskrnl.exe pci.sys

    Dell Studio XPS 9100
    Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit
    CPU:Intel Core i7-960 processor
    Memory: 12 GB
    Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD
    Monitor HP pavillion vf17
    Screen Resolution 1707 X 960
Hard drive: 2TB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive 7200 RPM

3 dumps in about 2 weeks time, last two identical (hal.dll+12a3b ntoskrnl.exe+18cb13 pci.sys+9bcf). I don't do any gaming. This can happen after a startup or it can happen after computer has been on for hours. I can be writing an email or be away from the computer. One thing I have noticed about this computer since the day I bought it in 2011 is the fan(s) can get very loud, esp if downloading.

After the second of the 3 dumps (on 11/8) I downloaded and thought I installed latest Seagate Barracuda XT driver for my hard drive ST32000641AS. I say I thought I installed because the date of 6/21/2006 still shows for the driver date, which is the date it was before I did the install.

I am new at this so if I need to add more information please advise and thank you for any help. I have had similar problems in the past but was not set up for a dump so don't know if it was exactly the same. When I called Dell they told me to reinstall Windows. That is something I really do not want to do, if at all possible. That time I fumbled around downloading different things and probably did some system restores and suddenly the problem stopped. Since I really don't know what I did last time to 'fix' it I can't repeat it. And it was likely only temporary. This time I would like to get it fixed for real. I didn't call Dell this time cause I know their answer.

I thought I did follow the instructions. I uploaded the zip file, I put the system specs that I know of in and gave an idea on what I was doing (or not doing) on the computer at the time of the dumps.

Obviously I am missing something or you would not have replied with that link, but I don't see what i am missing.

    Code:
    DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (9f)

    Probably caused by : nusb3hub.sys

    Image path: nusb3hub.sys
        Image name: nusb3hub.sys
        Timestamp: Mon Oct 26 14:19:44 2009 (4AE5B000)
    Driver Reference Table - nusb3hub.sys

    STOP 0x0000009F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

    Code:
    WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124)

    Probably caused by : GenuineIntel
Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

From the BSODs, some of your hardware is failing, therefore you can follow the steps within the Stop 0x124 link (post if you have any problems with the steps), also could you please update the driver referenced in the first block of code.

Thank you, i am working on that now. Could not find a download of nusb3hub.sys so working on the Stop 0x124 steps and currently downloading OCCT 4.3.2 to check the overclocking.

    Good to know

Two of the BSODs were related to Stop 0x124 BSOD, so I believe the hardware is more of a problem at the moment, than the driver itself.

I updated the BIOS, drivers and chipset and replaced the nusb driver. But i have had the same traps and dumps the last two days as the previous two traps. The traps occur right after I boot up in the morning (computer off for about 5-6 hours). This last trap caused the machine not to want to reboot and it had to do a Start Up Repair and asked if I wanted to restore to an older version, i said yes, i was not given a selection of which version.

I am going to try to contact Dell again, even tho I have no faith in what they will say to do. (reinstall Windows). This machine still has a few days warranty. But they will not admit it is hardware even tho my fans run loud at times and my video display indicates problems from time to time.

I will update here if something miraculous happens. Thanks for your help.

It's a hardware problem for sure! Tell Dell you had the Stop 0x124 BSOD which is strictly related to hardware issues.

    Your welcome :)

Will do (tell of Stop 0X124) i dont see the BSOD so i did not know what i was getting. just the dump. Their tech support is calling me in 8 minutes so we shall see. Last time i spent hours on phone with them, doing all kind of diags and they told me computer hardware was fine. Boring and not effective. Here is hoping for a better experience.

On 11/17/12 a.m. there were two more traps, one right after the other. the first one was identical to the previous three. The last one was similar but it also included references to the netbios.sys+1b27040 and mssmbios.sys+8cfb8d8

The only difference from 11/15 trap until the 11/17 traps is that Dell support removed the McAfee antivirus and instructed me to remove my external backup harddrive, which I did. Support then said to wait and see what happens. He said this problem could be drivers (all updated), antivirus (removed), or the need to reseat a few components.

The Bios was updated on 11/12, there was a trap on 11/15 that did not refer to the BIOS. The mention of it in the second trap of 11/17 (the last one so far) is giving me concern that things may be getting worse.

The last four traps occurred immediately after a boot up, following a complete shut down a few hours prior. (computer was cooler?) I know that the last three I still had the display on while the computer is off. Tonight I will be sure to turn the display off, as well in case that is a part of the puzzle.
