I have had NO BSOD or traps. However, while looking at the Event Viewer I saw this message from this morning.
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.

That controller error was followed by a Service Control Manager. I think it may be nothing. I know what i was doing at that time. I tried to forward an email that I had gotten in yahoo to someone. It caused IE to stop working.

The service control manager error says
The HomeGroup Provider service depends on the Function Discovery Provider Host service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
    ---------------------------

    There was no BSOD, tho.

It sounds like a problem with hard-drive controller:

    Intel(R) ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller:

    Code:
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\iastor.sys (9.6.0.1014, 528.02 KB (540,696 bytes), 2/9/2011 5:01 PM)
You could try looking for a later driver, but you may have the latest driver already, have you spoken to Dell about it?

I can't find any appropriate updates from the Intel website

The good point is, least the BSODs have stopped so far :)

I have not spoken with Dell.

Dell said to run in safe mode over weekend and i would get call on Monday. no call came. call did come on Tues but i was not expecting it and was not home for the call. there was another call during that Thanksgiving week, i dont recall when, but again i was not home and did not know the call was coming. (they have an email contact, btw). I don't have a number to call them back.

This week Dell called and i was not here. He said he would call 'tomorrow' which was Tuesday or Wed, cant recall. i do know i waited (since no time was given) and NO CALL that day. In the msg he asks if i reinstalled Windows but does not give me a way to reply to him.

I am going to do the next step you mentioned, i just need to get a chunk of time available.

Thank you so very much. and if this next step shows all good, i am going to try putting something in that USB port since the fans have seemed to quiet down again.

Your welcome, and I don't see why a complete reinstall is even necessary yet

You could also check for any drivers which may be causing problems, remember to only select drivers not related to Windows:

Run for at least 24 hours, and if no BSODs occur then you can stop the test :)

I am trying to run the SFC /SCANNOW but when I boot from the Windows CD that came with my computer I don't get the option to select language and then to Repair. What happens is the computer boots up as if I am booting from my harddrive, straight to Windows 7.

I am definitely booting from the CD because the screen came up to ask me which drive should i boot from and I selected the CD/DVD drive.

What kind of DVD are you using? Is it a Dell Recovery Disc or Windows 7 Installation DVD?

One of my other possible symptoms just started last nite. My display will go black and then return. It is only for maybe 2 seconds. This display has done this pretty much from the beginning of when i bought this in early 2011, on and off. It had stopped for a while (or seemed to) but now it is occurring again. Also, regarding the display, when i have a few windows open if i move one it leaves trails, a lot of them, the point that I have to close that window.

Run System File Checker from within Windows 7, this will scan for corrupted or missing protected Windows 7 files:
