Microsoft tool doesn't recognise the file-must be file related rather than application.

    How do I check MD5?
HashTab tool to quickly find file hash information

But if you know the MD5 value of the ISO on your disk.... you have to compare it with the real value to prove it has downloaded the correct way.
Sorry, but this means absolutely nothing to me!

Im thinking I might just do a clean install - is that a wise option?
Clean install doesn't work as well if you have a bad ISO. Be patient!

Yeh - I was going to download the file again. Is this worthwhile?

    Maybe better download this one:
    Windows 7 Ultimate SP1-U ISO
    English x64: X17-59465.iso

Then this Create Windows 7 Universal ISO With All Editions Selection On Install with ei.cfg Removal Utility « My Digital Life to make it a universal one.

I have noticed that the Win 7 HP 64 bit file I downloaded is only 2GB in size, yet the download is supposed to be 3.1GB.

All x64 win7 versions of one language are on 1 DVD
All x32 win7 versions of one language are on 1 DVD

So x64 english home premium DVD is exactly the same as ultimate!! Only a few bytes are different

Only difference is file ei.cfg... just a menu that shows what's allowed to install.

    File should be 3.1 GB

I think you have misunderstood what I said.

The file I downloaded a few days ago from Dell Community - X1758997 is only 2GB in size! The file type is definetly an ISO file.

Why would this be the case? Is the download corrupt or is it compressed?
