    BSOD Occurs When System Attempts Sleep Mode

    I have a Dell Studio XPS that has been rebuilt on replaced HD's. Installation was completed using Dell's Windows 7 SP1 Installation disk along with the latest drivers from Dell's website. All seemed to be going well until I set the Power Settings to use sleep mode. Upon doing so I discovered that system crashes when it attempts to enters or when I select Sleep Mode. I've spent the better part of the day researching this issue and trying to find a solution. During my search for a solution I ran across this forum. I've tried the fixes that I could find however none have corrected the issue.

    Prior to downloading and using the SF Diagnostic Tool I ran sfc /verifyonly. It's output did not reveal any problems;

    Code:
    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /verifyonly

    Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

    Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

    Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
    Output of the SF Diagnostic Tool is attached.

    Just in case there's a relationship to the problem, I mistakenly installed a NEC USB driver. Try as I may, I cannot figure out how to remove the driver. No items show in the "Add Remove Programs" or "Device Manager". The files associated with this driver are named nusb3hub.sys and nusb3xhc.sys. They were created by Renesas Electronics and are dated 30/09/2010 12:00:03 AM
    Renesas Electronics US Kernel 30/09/2010 12:00:03 AM

    Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

    It is caused by the USB modem driver.
    Code:
    *******************************************************************************
    *                                                                             *

    Device Type    External Modem
    Attached To    COM3
    How old the modem is? Try to update the modem's driver. And follow some general USB related troubleshooting:

    For the port, first, uninstall and reinstall the USB ports drivers.

    1. Right click on Computer icon > manage. It will open the computer management window.
    2. Click on "Device Manager" in the left pane, it will list all installed devices up.
    3. Expand "USB Serial Bus Controllers" by clicking on the triangle in front of it.
    4. Click on one item to select, then right click and uninstall.
    5. Do the same for all.
    6. Restart the computer.
    7. At restart, windows will auto configure the appropriate drivers.

    And, Disable USB Selective Suspense too.
    USB Selective Suspend - Turn On or Off

    For the devices, first, detach all the USB devices other than the keyboard and mouse.
    Then, Update the drivers for them all, including the keyboard and mouse, if any third party drivers are installed for them.

    Let us know the results.

    I've made some good headway! The machine no longer BSOD's when attempting to go into sleep mode. It now initiates the Sleep process then returns to the Login window.

    The modem is the same age as the PC, 2 years. The driver used was the latest from Dell's Web Site, specific for my machine and modem. Since a newer driver wasn't available I rolled back to the driver installed by Windows and tried again. Same thing occurred, BSOD on sleep. Using the device manager I uninstalled the modem then unplugged it from the PC. This resulted in the machine initiating the Sleep process then returning to the Login window.

    I next followed the instruction to clean up the USB ports and remove all items listed under "USB Serial Bus Controllers". I was only successful to a point. After several attempts at removing all items I finally was able to remove everything except the "Intel ICH10 Family USB Enhanced Host Controllers". Attempts at removing the eight or so listed entries were thwarted by loose of mouse and keyboard control. BTW; The keyboard and mouse are wireless thus the wireless adapter was plugged into one of the USB slots in order to perform the above steps.

    The last thing I did was Disable USB Selective Suspend. This result was the same; the machine initiates the Sleep process then returns to the Login window.

    Attached is an updated SF Diagnostics file. I'm hopeful the information will lead to the cause of this issue.

    Thanks thus far for your assistance. We seem to be making good headway.

    The problem is the modem's driver, as per the latest dump, too.

    I am asking for some more help.

    Other than sleep (And the modem as it's now unplugged), everything else seems to be working correctly. If I do find any other odd behavior while waiting for additional help I'll post it to this thread.

    Thank you for the assistance.

    Hello rcblackwell, is it possible that you stop using the USB one, and get one that may be installed in the computer? USB networking devices are problematic for most of the times, specially when the updated drivers are not availavle.

    BSOD Resolved - Now System Won't Sleep

    Sure it is. What I've done for now is uninstall the related drivers and remove the Modem from the USB port. THis action has stopped BSOD.

    There's still the "non-sleep" issue that needs to be addressed. Something is preventing the system from going to sleep. When the system attempts to sleep it cycles through the first stages of the sleep cycle then presents the Windows Logon Screen. A fresh set of SF Diagnostic files is attached for reference.

    Hurray - it's fixed

    Enabling hibernate didn't correct the issue so I then disabled "Hybrid Sleep". Taking this action corrected the issue.

    In summary, two issues were present;

    1) A bad modem driver.

    2) Incorrect Sleep settings

    The original BSOD problem was corrected through use of Device Manage. The modem was selected then uninstalled. Prior to clicking on okay at the Uninstall Window I made sure the check box next to "Remove Driver Files" was selected. Once the driver was removed the modem was unplugged from the machine. Before rebooting the instruction for general USB related troubleshooting that was provided in an earlier post was followed.

    The issue dealing with the PC turning itself back on following the issuance of a sleep command was corrected by enabling hibernate mode then disabling Hybrid Sleep.

    Thank you so much for you help.
