Ok Rusty I am out of options mate I have had hard drives that are bung from the factory let alone a few months or weeks old but what you do - this is up to you mate I am just trying to eliminate the possibilities.

That is how I work I am not much chop at decyphering those logs to be honest and a quick Google came up with all sorts of causes including what I am telling you myself but the choice is yours. I hope you find someting from someone but there is is this

Windows 7 64-bit randomly restarts itself and these if you want to use them

John, appreciate your suggestions and I will work them in time. I have limited time to mess with this problem. I always like to know the logic of the course of action I'm taking. Pushing the I/O of the machine - the hard drive, the graphics, are logical in the same way that running memtest is, I imagine.

I left the machine in safe mode (no networking) for over 12 hours last night and no reboots have occurred, but no I/O happening either, I suppose.

If running the hard drive doesn't produce any results, maybe running something that is network intensive will be the next step in the process of elimination.

Pauly and John, I very much appreciate your continued support and ideas.

My drive is a Hitachi so the Seagate test wouldn't work. Hitachi (Now HGST) has a thing called WinDFT (Windows Drive Fitness Test) but after loading it, I found that it is only good for IDE and USB-connected drives. My drive is SATA. So I've loaded and am now running "Minitool Partition Wizard" Surface Test... We'll see what happens.

Well guys, I scrubbed the hard drive and re-installed windows 7 from the image that I created out-of-the-box. The machine ran well for the first 10 weeks that I had it. It has steadily been getting worse since then.

After I loaded the image, I let Windows do all of its updates to make it current. But the machine still does its reboots while sitting idle with no other software loaded.

I started googling "ASUS U56E reboot" and found many other folks with the same problem. One in particular was running his as a dual boot machine, running Ubuntu and Windows. The problem was independent of the operating system that he ran. Since his was under warranty, he was able to get the system board replaced and the last post that he made said that his was running well.

I'm going to mark this as solved because it is obviously not a software problem and not a Windows problem. If anyone wants to contact me to discuss this particular model ASUS (U56E), feel free to do so.

Thanks once again for all the help. I've learned a lot and your help was invaluable. The tools to find the machine serial number and to get the Windows license number from software were necessary. This is a factory refurbished machine and the serial number shown in firmware, as well as the Windows 7 Home Premium license number retrieved from software, did not match the labels on the bottom of the "refurbished" computer.

What bios version are you running for your board, if you suspect it you could try updating to the latest bios if possible, also could try checking your system voltages to make sure your psu is working correctly and sending the right voltages through the machine to mobo, OCCT is good for this will give you graphs of your 3.3V 12V etc outputs

Mine came with the latest bios version - 213. ASUS put it out in Nov or Dec of 2011 and it is the last bios update that they did.

    What is mobo and OCCT?

I'm measuring the output of the external power supply at 18.98VDC. That is on the money, as it is supposed to be 19VDC.

The problem occurs whether running on external power or battery.

    mobo = motherboard
OCCT = a program that monitors internal system voltages being fed to pc components

Once again, Pauly, thanks for the help.

I've downloaded OCCT and I'll play with it. I've started tearing the ASUS apart so at this point would have to reassemble quite a bit of it in order to run anything.

I'm almost ready to order a new mobo for it but I'd sure feel better if there was something to tell me that the system board is, in fact, the problem.

It looks like all the voltage distribution is built into it and I suspect that there is some power distribution problem causing the problem. Some component was good when I first got it but has failed over the few weeks that I've been using it.

Unfortunately mate the motherboard is the only component you cant really prove one way or the other unless there is obvious signs on it

Yeah. It's an expensive crap shoot. At this point, I can either turn it into a lab project or take my frustration out on it with a sledge hammer. Either way, I see a lot of cash that could have been used to buy Guinness.
