Full Screen applications causing Atikmpag.sys BSOD - HD Radeon 5970

Hello,

I have been having issues where at first it seemed to be random Blue screen crashes, but now think it only seems to happen if i try to run a game in full screen. Even just uninstalling the AMD drivers causes me to BSOD mid un-installation process.

The blue screen says the file name "Atikmpag.sys". I don't normally game on my computer so i never really noticed this error in the past. There were a few instanced where i would randomly blue screen with the same "Atikmpag.sys" but restart and i was good to go. Only now when my friend has told me to get a couple of games i BSOD at the startup usually when the screen goes black to attempt to full screen. Not just 1 game though, iv tried several all showing the same BSOD message without even getting into the game.

Also just in Steam trying to go to "Big Window" Causes stream to crash with an error of resize buffer failed.

So like i said in the begining was a once in a while crash but now it seems to be something with full screen i think, but im a noob at this so not entirely sure. Iv researched around and tried to follow a lot of the suggestions such as reinstalling and such with no success.

I have updated my profile here to show my current system specs. But for quick reference;

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel Core i7 920
8GB RAM
AMD ATI HD Radeon 5970
WD 2TB HDD
850 WATT Cooler Master

I have updated Windows and there are no more updates available through "Windows Update" aside from optional Language packs. I have .NET Framework 4.5 installed. I have tried uninstalling all of the AMD drivers using Catalast install manager and reinstalling but i have also used driver sweeper to completely uninstall all of my AMD drives as the install manager seemed to miss a few and even after a restart and installing the newest drivers again and then another restart i still blue screen if i try to full screen.

I have attached a zipped copy of "SF_Diagnostic_Tool" output.

If there is any other information that is required or could help pinpoint an issue let me know and ill get it.

Hello McCaulk.

You are using a beta version of display driver. It is recommended that you install a stable WHQL version.

Download and install Driver Fusion.
Reboot the computer in Advanced Boot Options, safe mode. Search Driver Fusion in your start menu, and remove all components of your ATI/AMD display driver.
Boot normally now. Update your ATI/AMD display driver.
You can get it from the link in our forum, Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7, or you may go to AMD Graphics Driver and Software and opt for Automatically Detect and Install the appropriate driver for your card.

During installation, you may opt for advanced installation, and install the display driver only, not the Catalyst Control Center.

I followed the first steps.

I uninstalled CCC and all AMD software using the Instal manager, then downloaded Driver fusion and the latest stable build of the drivers. Restarted in Safe mode ran Driver Fusion and deleted all my AMD Display drivers. Restarted again normal and ran the latest stable drivers and unselected CCC in the custom list of things to install. It said instal complete and that Windows would have to restart and if i would like to restart windows now and i clicked yes. When it restarted i got to the part where it says "Welcome" with a little blue spinning circle and then the screen went blank then i got a BSOD. It restarted by itself and booted into windows but the display seemed to be really slow so i looked at the device manager to find that my GPU was disabled and gave me the option to enable, i enabled then it said i will have to restart. After the restart it booted into windows and the display went back to normal. But still not able to full or start any of the games without getting a BSOD.

Now i also tried to follow along with the second step and link you posted and i found that the thread links to errors with "Atikmdag.sys" and not all for "Atilmpag.sys" (my error) so i only followed links with the name of the file error that i was having.

I have not overclocked anything on this computer. I think my temps are within normal range. At the time of this post all my cores and both GPUs are right around 60c. I also did a system file check that returned no errors.

But being that my motherboard is just a stock dell from an XPS 9000 i don't think im able to update the bios as iv not found much info about the motherboard. Which lead me to think it might be a problem with the card but then why does it only happen with certain applications. If i don't try to run a game or full screen i can keep my computer on operating normally for days.

Sorry, im a noob at this.

You have done a lot, congrats for it. :)

atikmdag.sys and atikmpag.sys both are the drivers related ti ATI/AMD display drivers, so all the steps are the same for the both.

You may take a stress test ..... stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.

And if you upload the latest crash dumps, we may check if those are the same stop 0x116 or anything else.

Edit: you may try one more thing ... remove Hauppague Device central from startup. Free up the startup.

Click on the Start button
Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the “Startup” tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
Apply > OK
Accept the restart.

Hi,

I have attached a new zipped file of my "SF_Diagnostic_Tool" Dump.

I have also disabled all my startup programs except for my anti virus.

I also tried running the stress test Furmark and when i start it the screen goes blank as it seems to want to go full screen then changed into a windowed version but if i move the window i get Visual artifacts.

Can you use the onboard graphics and not the graphics card, just to see if it is giving the same result or not?

My Motherboard "DELL 0X501H" does not have on board graphics unfortunately.
