Have you tried updating your hard-drive controller and checking for any possible BIOS updates?

Hard drive controller? Is that my SATA drivers? Afaik, there is a Marvell controller driver, on my motherboards download page, as well as an Intel Rapid Storage technology driver. I just installed the marvel controller driver, havent yet done IRST since I'm not 100% what it does, or if I can get any use from it.

My BIOS is quite recent, I'm running version 3207 dated june 2012, which I updated from the first release (0105 may 2011). There is a newer version though, dated November 2012, so I could try updating that if you think will help.

I wouldn't download Intel Rapid Storage, it tends to cause problems and usually only used for RAID setups. I would get the latest BIOS update as it's best to have the latest BIOS.

Have you tried rebooting? Have you tried using the Western Digital program instead?

I've tried rebooting. Should I try resetting the jumpers?

As for the WD program, the one I used worked in the windows environment. There is another version of the same program, called 'Data Lifeguard for DOS', but I'm not exactly sure what to do with that, since it downloads as a zipped application, not an ISO or disk image.

I found an disk image version on the same 'hard drive diagnostic procedure page', which I believe is the same program, although presumably it is an earlier version (5.04 rather than 5.20), but I guess that shouldn't matter. I've just burned it to disk, so I'll see if it works.

Hmm, okay. The WD Data lifeguard ISO I downloaded doesn't seem to work as such.

When I select the primary boot option as my DVD drive. It starts loading up 'Caldera DR DOS', and then has a little more white text scroll out that is to do with ownership and such, but then the screen just goes dark, and it does nothing else. There's no light flickering on my DVD drive to show that it is doing anything.

This is the program I'm using. WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD Green / GP

That download doesn't come with an ISO or disk image, but like I mentioned previously, I found a link on the page you posted, that had a link to a zipped ISO of what appeared to be the same program. I burned the disk using windows 7 disck burner utility.

This was the program I used previously: WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD Green / GP It appears to be the exact same thing apart from that it can operate within Windows.

Okay, it actually does work. It seemed I needed to leave it for quite a long time for it to 'start up', but the program was unable to detect any drives either.

Could it be down to the locations I have the drives in? I have 4 6GB/S sockets and 4 3GB/S sockets on my mobo. And, the two 6GBS nearest the 'top' of the motherboard, I don't have anything plugged into those.

The first 2 are marvell 6GB/S connectors, whilst the next 2 are 'intel' 6GB/S connectors, and the last 4 are also 'intel' connectors, albeit 3GB/S. Could the fact that the 'first' two slots are empty account for programs not detecting my drives, and the message I get at POST?

You could try it, and is the hard-drive recognized within Disk Management?

Okidoke. I'll have a go at connecting the hard drives to the marvell sockets soon, and I can try the jumper at the same time. And yeah, disk management recognizes both disks/volumes in windows.
