BSOD when just CHECKING sound settings in Control Panel

One of many problems recently has been that every time I visit the sound settings under Recording--don't even change anything--I get a BSOD. I disabled the internal mike on my HP DV7 since I use external mikes. I have no idea why this is happening, but my system protection has also been disabled, although nothing screwy shows up in virus and malware scans. So i can't even do a system restore to undo anything. I have a minidump file and xml file related to this, but it's not listed as a valid attachment here. I did notice one of the messages on the screen itself said STdriver64.sys and Driver IRQ not less or equal, but have no idea what this could mean. Any ideas?

Reinstall the HP provided sound driver and see if that helps.
