I managed to resolve this issue by installing the video card driver from the manufacturer. As I said I have a Radeon HD 4870 card. Previously I had the generic ATI driver installed, but since I installed the driver from Sapphire I haven't had any more lockups.

I don't think that is an option for me, since Gigabyte hasn't updated the drivers for my card for a year.

Get them from ATI's (AMD's) website!

I already have the newest drivers. Like karcheba said, he fixed his problem by getting drivers off of Sapphire's website, so I tried the same thing with Gigabyte's. No luck though.

Still trying to figure this out. About a month ago I moved one of my monitors and it stopped doing this for a few days, but then it started back up again.

Hi Smiler. Iīve been having the exact same problem for over a year now, and itīs been driving me insane!
I know this is an old topic, but this issue havent been fixed as far as I know. So I hope to be able to contribute to getting this problem fixed!

I recently figured out that the problem had something to do with the dual monitors, after checking literally EVERYTHING, including all the graphic drivers. I run an extremely optimized system with all the unessesary processes and extended softwares like ATI Catalyst etc disabled. Have Ultramon and Desktop Confusion installed, but completely unactivated.

So the problem has to be in the graphic drivers, either ATIīs or Microsofts, maybe collition or some corrupt reg key.
The major difficulty in trying to fix this problem is that I canīt recreate the problem. It occurs randomly, when computer working or when completely idle. Even when afk and the mouse is on the first monitor. Sometimes it happens 5 times a day, and sometimes once every second week or so.

And it acts differently each time the mouse pointer changes. Sometimes the computer freeze completely, and theres nothing to do exept cut the power to the computer. And sometimes I have about 2-3 seconds to close a random program or move the pointer to my second screen, and it may or may not change the pointer back and prevent it from freeze lock.

So when the symptom and fix is random and sometimes occur Very seldom, its very hard to figure out whats causing it. But I hope to get to the bottom of this, and to find a solution to contribute.

Today my quest starts with me reinstalling the computer with a CLEAN and uncorrupted registry. Then to add different graphic card drivers and programs like Ultramon and Display Fusion, to see if I can recreate the problem.
During this process im gonna track every added registry key to be able to backtrace it later on if I can reproduce the problem.

I`ll post my progress later on in this thread!
