    BSOD - stop 0x1E

    Hi,

Thank you in advance of any help you can provide.

I recently added a WD20EZRX 2TB advanced format drive to my pc and since then I've started getting random crashes, one specified ntfs.sys in the bsod but the others haven't mentioned any drivers at all, just this stop 0x1E error.

I use my pc for work mostly so don't have a discrete graphics card or play any games. I've had the crashes when browsing using IE v9 64bit and also when playing video with VLC player.

I've checked and I have the latest Bios, audio and graphics driver from the ASUS website.

I've attached your SF Diagnostic Tool data as instructed.

    Kind regards.

This is almost certainly a counterfeit install.
The motherboard appears to be a retail one
Key, SLIC table appear to be from ASUS - but since when is that board a Notebook?
Where did you acquire this copy of Windows from?

It's definitely not a notebook, it's a desktop pc. I don't have a cd/dvd drive so this was setup for me by one of the guys at work from a usb dongle.

So where did you get the license?
If you didn't shell out for it, it's definitely counterfeit - you should also have disks/package and a Key.

I only have the original cd and product key which is for XP Professional. We have, i think, 5 licences for Windows 7 so i guess I could take one from a laptop we're not using or could i use it on the laptop and my desktop concurrently, as I would only be able to use one device at any particular time?

NO - Licenses that are pre-installed are OEM licenses which become locked to the first motherboard on which they are activated, and cannot be moved to other machines under any circumstances. Such licenses live and die on that motherboard.

Upgrade and Retail licenses can be moved under appropriate circumstances - you could use an Upgrade copy on this machine, since it has a qualifying XP license.

...one last question how do I actually check them? Koolkat77 obviously saw something that indicated a problem, what should I be looking for?
