Would it be easier to take out the hard drive and fit it into a sata caddy and run the tests on my main pc ?
Edit - I did this and ran a hard drive diagnostic tool as suggested. This came up with a few errors sayon Bad LBA : Not repaired.

Which HD diagnostics are you running? Run it again to see if it confirms the problem, and can repair it.
I'd also want to see a full Disk Check on the HD from Win7 or the installer's booted Command Line.
It's an Hitachi drive so from the link posted earlier I used the Seagate diagnostic tool which gave the following :

Hitachi has an excellent drive diagnostics/repair scan Hitachi Drive Fitness Test CD download. It can even repair a drive.
Thanks gregrocker. I have used this tool now and it sails through the quick test but the strange thing is on the advanced test it gets so far through and then just shuts down.
