BSOD STOP 0x00000124, While gaming and stress test.

    Hi guys,

I am new to the forums and I hope that doesn't stop me from getting help from you guys. I have been on this BSOD case for 2 months now and today I have tried many things to stop it from happening.

    Specs:

    MoBo: Asus P8Z68v pro gen-3
    Core: Intel i7 2600K (OC'd to 4.7ghz)
    RAM: 16gb G skill ram (4x4gb)
    Video Card: EVGA GTX680 2gb
    PSU: Corsair GS800 (800w)
    Cooling: Corsair H100
Standard DVD drive (sorry not sure what it is but it might be in the report, ripped out of my old PC)
    SSD: Corsair Force GT3 120gb
HHD(s): 1tb WD caviar green and WD 650gb (sorry unknown type, ripped it out of my old PC)

    Scenario

I built this PC from scratch about a year ago, and it recently started to BSOD more frequently, prior to the last two months I had probably about 2 BSODs through out the year. This did not concern me as errors do occur and they were not frequent. However as of late, I had BSOD's on a daily base while gaming, possibly from once a day to maybe 4~ a day. I have deduced that it is a hardware error BSOD, and it only happens while the system is under a heavy load.

    Error

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
    Locale ID: 1033

    Additional information about the problem:
    BCCode: 124
    BCP1: 0000000000000000
    BCP2: FFFFFA800FE54028
    BCP3: 00000000BE200000
    BCP4: 000000000005110A
    OS Version: 6_1_7600
    Service Pack: 0_0
    Product: 256_1

Files that help describe the problem:
    C:\Windows\Minidump\030313-10670-01.dmp
    C:\Users\Over-Drive\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-11497-0.sysdata.xml

The games I played haven't changed through out the year:

    TERA Online
    Diablo 3
    Starcraft 2
    Borderlands 2
    League of Legends
    Dota2

Might be a few others but I can't recall, however those are the big ones.

To be noted, most of the BSOD's occur when I play TERA Online, as that game is possibly the most CPU intensive game out of the list and possibly pushes my system the hardest out of the list.

Also BSOD'd once on Starcraft 2, but just once recently.

Things I have tried and noticed:

    - Google people with similar problems.
    - memtest (ran for about 2 hours no problems, will run for longer periods of time if need be)
    - taken apart my system and reassembled, with a reformat (just done today)
    - Downgraded my BIOS to v3202 today before reformat + reassemble (I upgraded it last time I reformatted and the BSOD's only started to happen after I did the reformat and bios upgrade)
    - Might be a GPU problem, had problems with the drivers long ago, which didn't allow card to OC, and it also kept switching on an off? screen flickers sometimes and graphics drivers kill itself and turn itself back on. Currently using Drivers 3.14 from nvidia.
    - Crystal disk tells me all my 1tb HDD is in cautious condition, other two is in good shape.

    After reformatting:

Stressed tested with Prime95, used real temp to check temps and CPU ID to check that all processors are running at full speed.

    BSOD'd at 4.3ghz with 1.03 bus, 4.7ghz with 1.00 bus, 4.4ghz with 1.00 bus.

Survived 4.3ghz with 1.00 bus once, (ran for around 17 mins prime said test completed) and then failed again at same speeds after seeing if I could push the machine a bit higher with higher clocks. (reverted back)

If anyone could look in to this and be able to pin point the issue, I would be thankful.

I will attach a screenshot of bluescreenview too if that helps.

If there's any missing information I could give you please let me know and once again thank you for your time.

    Hi,
Firstly Upgrade to Win 7 Service Pack 1 and ensure you have all windows updates installed.
This will help improve system stability.

This points to a hardware problem. In the majority of these logs, a hardware problem was detected by the CPU and reported to the operating system in the form of an MCE - Machine Check Exception.
The results of that problem are contained in the logs above, and the problem reported was a cache error.
Have you been overclocking the system much?
As most of your crashes are caused by running Prime95 and relate to CPU/cache issues, then it leans
toward CPU/Cache being at fault. First we can run some tests.

Did you check the CPU temps? What were they?
Did you apply new thermal paste when you reassemled your machine? Adequate Airflow?

I also noticed evidence of Registry corruption.

You could run SFC to check the integrity of all Windows 7 system files:
Click on the Start > Type in search cmd
Right click cmd at top and Run as Administrator
Type SFC /scannow at the prompt (note the space between SFC and /scannow)

    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Also please Run chkdsk /f/r in an elevated command prompt.

Click on the Start > Type in search cmd
Right click cmd at top and Run as Administrator
At the command prompt please type: chkdsk /f/r
(Note: there is a space between chkdsk and /f/r)

    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
    Check your memory again:
Take memtest. Run for 8 passes and test each stick in a know good slot for an additional 6 passes.

    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

Run WDO and scan for viruses:

    Also please follow this guide:

Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try

Post back any observations or feed back after you have carried out the above updates etc.

    Cheers

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the insight in to my BSOD issue. I am currently working on the SP1 update and have scanned my registries. CMD said nothings wrong with the registry, and I find it strange that there's already hints at registry corruption in a fresh windows 7 install , I am gonna do virus scan with the MSSS tool.

In regards to the OCing, yes I have been somewhat over clocking them. Nothing too crazy though, mostly with in what people who own the same cores range (people have been reporting 4.8ghz+ on an enclosed water cooling system).

I haven't replaced the thermal paste because temps haven't abnormal or unstable. At 4.4ghz - 4.7ghz, I have been getting 60~65 degrees on all cores at full load using prime95 (idle is around 30~ degrees). In which most cases, my cores realistically will never run at 100% load.

I have however ran the cores at factory OC speeds which was 3.8ghz with prime95. Tortured the PC for almost an hour straight and no BSOD's which actually might lead me to believe it was an OC issue. Usually BSOD's occur with in the first 5 mins of prime95 torturing.

Will give further updates as I progress with the steps,

    Thanks Dave.

Hi and thanks for the feedback,

Yes, your symptoms are synonymous with that of an Overclocked system, I would run normal
and run the system and games, see what the outcome is.

    cheers

    Dave
