BSOD 3b, random

Hello,

I've been experiencing BCcode 3b's for about a month and half now. They are random, but most typically
occur when I'm play UT2K4 (Unreal Tournament 2004... ya, I still play it, and ONLY that !

) However,
I have had it occur when just browsing.

Sometimes they will happen 3x within a few hours, other times I go days without an occurrence.

Here is what I have done.

1. Ran MemTest for two complete passes (16gB)
2. Removed Nvidia drivers, ran driver sweeper and downgraded to version prior to when I started experiencing problems.
3. Installed Windows7 image created shortly after primary installation (note: Win7 resides on own drive, an SSD)
4. Ran FurMark to ensure video card not having issues (heat or other), passed fine.
5. Ran Prime95-64bit (in "blend") through two iterations, no issues (note: System is not OC'd and never has been)
6. Reseated all internal connectors from PS (have not swapped in spare PS, yet).

That's it.

While this isn't (or hasn't become) crippling, it sure is annoying. Oh, and I've googled "the crap" out of
this and while I'm fairly PC savvy, it's apparent this kind of stuff is above my comfort/knowledge level.

Hi -

What security software are you using?

We recommended Microsoft Security Essentials from a strict BSOD perspective. Is most compatible & provides most stability compared to other antivirus app/Internet Security Software.

Warning

Do not start the free trial of Malware Bytes; remember to deselect that option when prompted.

Run a full scan with both (separately) once downloaded, installed and updated.

Update the following driver:

Number down items at start-up. Keep only your anti-virus, this also improves the time for logging into windows.

Perform a System File Check to check the integrity of all protected Windows 7:

1. I run Avast... do I really need to change ? I've used it for years and this system ran flawlessly with it for at least a year prior to the start of the BSOD's.

2. Ran MalwareBytes. It caught two things stored in a container (zip drive) of an un-used and never installed archive (ya, I'm guilty of pack ratting things). Deleted the archive.

3. Checked all discs. One partition of one drive would cause Windows to hang. The drive appeared to operate normally otherwise (I could read/write off of it), it just didn't like being checked for errors. I formatted the b***h and the problem disappeared.

4. Removed all RealTek drivers, swept, re-installed latest version.

5. Removed NCH software, swept. Downloaded newer version of s/w (no driver update available), re-installed.

6. Firmware on my SSD ? YIKES. It's a 128gB Crucial M4, when I explored the upgraded firmware on the net there were horror stories. I am going to let the PC run as is now and if the BSOD issue is still there, I'll venture into that scary proposition.

7. SFC ran, no issues.

I'll report back (if a BSOD occurs), and in a few weeks if it appears to be stable.

Thanks for the update.

Avast! does contribute in BSOD on some systems and outdated SSD firmware causes a BSOD coming with BCC F4.

Anyway, update the thread when you get BSOD again :)
