BSOD playing Civilization game, screen flickers and more

My PC used to run great and I could play the games I enjoy...Civilization 3-5, Civ Rome, AofE, and those sorts of games. I'm now unable to play any of these games due to a problem. The PC will freeze or simply go to BSOD. I don't understand since it has all of the components necessary to play these games. I've use software to monitor the heat and CPU. The system never gets hot but I boost the fan up anyway. What I see on the charts is that the CPU begins jumping around and then suddenly goes to full 100. When it's "jumping around" the game gets glitchy and the screen has flickers or bad spots. Naturally, once the CPU hits 100 the PC freezes or goes to BSOD.

I have followed the instructions you gave and have attached the zip file. I'd really appreciate help solving this mystery. It sucks to have a computer capable of good things but unable to perform them.

    Code:
    BugCheck 10000001, {8284d44a, 0, ffff, 0}

    Probably caused by : Unknown_Image ( nt!NtDeviceIoControlFile+0 )
Scan for any missing, modified or corrupted protected Windows files with:

    Remove:

    Code:
    Start Menu\Programs\Norton
Norton is known to cause BSODs, please remove with the official removal program:

Install and perform full scans with:

Remember to install the free version of Malwarebytes not the free trail; untick the free trial box during installation. MSE is the most lightweight and compatible with the Windows 7 operating system.

You can also view this thread for a complete free and lightweight security protection combination:

    Remove:

    Code:
    Start Menu\Programs\MSI Afterburner
    Start Menu\Programs\MSI Afterburner\SDK
Overclocking and performance programs can also cause programs. Please stop overclocking any other hardware if doing so.

Reduce the number of programs at startup, to avoid any driver or program conflicts:

I'm not very bright or observant

I thank you for the reply, which was both easy to understand and rapid. Problem is I must've posted in the wrong forum. Your response regarding the scan was for windows 7 and I have vista ultimate. I'm running the norton removal program. Is there a scan for vista which is similar or equal to the one you posted?

Microsoft Security Essentials is a new, free consumer anti-malware solution for your computer. It helps protect against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It's available as a no-cost download for Windows XP SP2 and higher, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
MSE should work with Windows Vista if that is what your concerned with, and Malwarebytes will work also.
