Windows 7: HP Pavilion DV7, Win 7 Ult 64bit, sleep mode freezes co

I have a HP dv7-1199eg. Everything works just fine, I've had one crash in several months now and that was my own fault; I tried to install software I knew to be incompatible.

I'm one of those few who believe an upgrade installation can be as good as a clean one, when it's done right. You can read more about my upgrade here.

I've done the same to a number of HP laptops now. Restoring factory defaults with Vista and bundled software plus all the drivers, then upgrading to Seven. No problems, not a single crash except the one I mentioned earlier.

Maybe you should try this if nothing else helps?

There's always a chance that doing something like an upgrade install from factory default installation could fix the sleep problem, but I suspect it would not. Up until yesterday HP had a new firmware available for download which was needed if you were going to install Windows 7 on my model of laptop. For some reason this firmware update has been pulled and no longer shows up on HP's website. Every problem I've ever had involving sleep and hibernate modes was an issue with the bios of the machine so, in this particular case, I'm betting I'm not the only person that had a problem with that new bios which is why HP pulled it. For the time being I can live without sleep mode so I'm holding out for a new bios. Just as an experiment I'll use an extra HD to try what you suggested to see what happens and I'll let you know.

Boodah, I saw the same thing happening. A few weeks ago when checking yhe HP drivers website, there was a flash BIOS utility for my HP d7. Nothing else, only the BIOS. I decided to ignore this and now it's gone.

Doesn't this tell something to you? If you flashed your BIOS with this later removed utility, I would go back and download the same utility from Vista drivers and try to flash my BIOS with that.

What I tried to say earlier is that Pavilion series laptops work flawless perfectly with Vista drivers.

The BIOS flash that was under the Windows 7 drivers was for BIOS rev. F.2C, which supposedly added Win 7 support. A check of the Vista drivers area shows the latest BIOS as F.2C. On a whim, I reverted to the previous BIOS which was F.2A but it solved nothing, the sleep problem remained.

Did a full recovery to Vista, updated it, then upgraded to Win 7, still no go. Hope HP releases the appropriate fix soon.

Weird, checked HP's website earlier today, still nothing. Now, I log into their website and the Windows 7 driver sections are back, yet still contain the exact same files as before those sections were pulled. I wonder what the deal is.

I checked the specs of your laptop, it is technically almost identical with mine. I still can not understand what could cause you issues. I've installed Seven now on three Pavilions, never had a problem.

Two things that comes to my mind: first, if you have installed the quick Launch Buttons you should remove it. It has known issues with Win7. And second, have you installed the latest drivers for you chipset and nVidia card?

Other than that, I feel helpless.

The only problem I'm having is the inability to put the laptop into sleep mode. I've tried the updated video driver and chipset driver, those have no effect on this condition. You indicated sleep mode doesn't work on your laptop, either. Does it work on the other Pavilions with Windows 7 installed?

Hhmm, Boodah might be onto something here.

You guys both have the Intel chips on yours I have the AMD in my DV7. Sleep mode does not work on any of these laptops from what we are seeing here, I have a feeling that we might see another BIOS update soon as Win 7 is released. Im going to do some searching to see what others have found I will stop back if I find out more.

That is a misunderstanding. Sleep and hibernate are working perfect on all Pavilions I / we have. Absolutely no problems.
