HP Pavilion DV7, Win 7 Ult 64bit, sleep mode freezes co

I was one of the lucky people who got an advance retail copy of Win 7 Ultimate. I've installed it on my HP Pavilion DV7 laptop and have discovered that both sleep mode and hibernate mode cause the computer to lock up completely requiring a forced power down. When entering sleep or hibernate mode the screen will shut off, you'll see a few seconds of HD activity and then the computer completely locks up. The backlit multimedia keys above the keyboard remain lit (these normally turn off in sleep or hibernate mode) and all keys and buttons are unresponsive except the power button, which I can hold down for 5 seconds to force a power-off. The laptop shipped with Vista Home Premium, both sleep and hibernate modes worked perfectly with Vista.

I have updated the BIOS to the latest one which HP says is needed as it adds Win 7 support. I have read the other threads on this site a few others talking about making changes to the various power settings, I have tried all of those suggestions and nothing seems to work. Unfortunately, the BIOS on this laptop does not have settings where I can edit the S1 and/or S3 modes but, again, sleep/hibernate worked perfectly under the previous OS. Has anyone seen something similar on another system and managed to fix it?

I'd suggest sourcing the latest updates for your NIC/audio/video/AV drivers directly from the vendors, and testing what happens when all drivers are updated as much as possible.

Power state transition lockups are almost always caused by incompatibilities with the BIOS or bugs in drivers.

I agree, in my experience that's usually the case hence why I checked on HP's website prior to installing Win 7 (which is where I got the updated BIOS).

Hi Boodah, I myself have a HP DV7 can you fill out your full system specs in your userCP just so I know what type of Dv7 you have there are two of them out there the Intel and AMD. I have the AMD and found that the multimedia key softpaq was a problem during RC but in RTM the lastest driver worked fine.
Now the next question for you was this an upgrade or clean install? I tested the upgrade and had more problems with that route but when I did a boot off the Win7 DVD and wiped the drive clean and did the install I had no problems what so ever.

My userCP has been updated to reflect my information. As a test I removed the HP SmartMenu and the QuickLaunch buttons but this has had no effect. This is an upgrade install, not a clean install, as I'm trying to avoid having to go that route. The upgrade install has gone perfectly except for this single issue. I've also discovered something interesting...if I boot the machine, I can either hit the power button or choose "Sleep" as soon as the login prompt appears and the machine will sleep properly. If I wait a few seconds after the login prompt appears and attempt to put the machine into sleep mode it locks up, so something appears to be loading in the background after the login prompt appears that's interfering with sleep mode.

Ok there could be a lot of items since it was an upgrade. Try to look at event viewer and see if there is any error messages there. Also look at msconfig and see what is loading when the machine boots.

Nothing in the EventLog that would tell me there's something specifically going wrong, plenty of stuff loading at boot but again, nothing that's a giveaway. As an experiment I popped a new drive into the laptop and did an install from scratch. When the install finished I took a look at the power options and discovered that sleep mode isn't even listed as an available mode on the machine, I could only choose between Power Off and Hibernate as actions, so I'm guessing there's some bits that HP is going to have to include as a patch to support sleep on this particular model of DV7 under Windows 7. Interesting, I've never seen a machine where sleep wasn't supported.

LOL now that Im home and looking at my DV7 I see power off or hibernate. When i used Vista sleep and hibernate never worked. If you test you will see that the hibernate comes back rather quickly so sleep is not needed, but i still understand that some would like to use sleep mode. I never liked sleep mode even back in XP days never got it to work the way it should.

Unfortunately, sleep mode is rather imperative for me in the long run. My machines are configured to wake themselves up from sleep mode to be automatically backed up to the Windows Home Server. The machine can't wake itself up from hibernation mode for this, unfortunately, so for now I'm going to have to do it manually.

By the way, I forgot to mention I logged into HP's website this morning to check for updated drivers/firmware and ALL drivers/firmware for this laptop for Windows 7 are now gone, HP appears to have pulled them.
