Multiple Errors: BSOD - Freezing - Couple of smaller ones...

Hello everyone,

To start off: I just made an account on this forums because I read some helpful info on threads on this forum that helped me out a bit. I know this problem I have is serious and strange, but I am out of options now.

So yesterday I came home and started up my computer. It is running on Windows 7 Home Premium x64. You can find the spec on my profile. So just a quick note: I disabled the windows startup animation because it would take too long. Instead a couple of small dots appear in the left top of the screen. Normally this appears for 5 sec, but now nothing happened and I decided I should reboot the pc. After the reboot it took kinda long again. I waited this time and eventually my worst nightmare appeared: a BSOD... So I tried to not go and panic and search for solutions online. I tried a lot of things but no result.

The error: STOP: c000021a [Fatal System Error].

Eventually I found my Windows cd and was able to reinstall it. So I have a ssd where windows is installed on. It all looked ok so I moved on.

The next day, it happened again. A nice BSOD appeared. This time things went differently. When I rebooted the pc, it wanted that I put a disc in and reboot to boot by that. So after some trying I got the repair tool on the cd to work. This took 1,5 hours and then crashed (freeze). Great... So I reboot the pc but this time I can start it up all the way to the desktop. You would think: problem solved. No. After 1 minute or the pc freezes, but I can still move my mouse. Only option is rebooting. When I try to run a repair from the cd, it is finished within a minute and nothing happened. I opened my pc case and looked if something was overheated or broken. Nothing special.
Btw: same in safe mode...

So I now tried to reinstall windows again. When I want to choose my hard disc to install it on, the ssd doesn't appear. Strange... When I try 'diskpart' in cmd, the ssd doesn't appear in the 'list disk'. But in the bios it is just there and I can start windows off it (for 1 min).

I haven't made changes to the pc and I got it now for 1,5 years. It is a custom build. Someone could help???

Hi,

When you installed your Win7, did you unplug the other HDD's? It may be a case of one of the other HDD's was at a lower port than the SSD and the Win7 installer may have installed the bootmgr to that.

I would suggest turning off your computer, disconnecting your other SATA HDD's, leave your SSD installed to SATA3 (if you have it - fastest), reboot and reinstall Win7 on to the SSD.
(You should now see your SSD as its the only Drive installed?)

After the installation on the SSD, you may have to change the bootsequence in the BIOS, so that
the SSD Boots first.

Once up and running you can then Format and reinstall your SATA drives (If this is an option?)

If formatting is not an option try the following:
Turn off computer, uplug, re-install SATA drives and boot up the system.
It may give you an option to boot from the SSD....and one of the other drives?
If so, choose SSD and it should load up as normal?
Reboot this time tapping F8 key at the Splash screen to go into the "Windows advanced option"
From there you should be able to remove the OS partition on the other drive.

If the computer boots straight into Win7 from your SSD then you should be fine.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for your reply. Your idea seems like a good idea, but before I go unplugging, replugging, booting, etc... , I want to ask some things.

First, I guess this idea you got will just allow me to reinstall windows. But I have done this one time before, and now it happened again. So I thought, could it be malware?

Second, if I wait long enough after the freeze, a black screen will appear. I can still see my cursor but eventually a BSOD will occur.

Third, I haven't been able to enter the F8 advanced mode, because if I click F8 it will open a boot menu of the bios. Believe me, I've tried my best.

In answer to your questions:

1. Yes this should allow you to reinstall windows onto the SSD. After a fresh install onto your SSD there should be no "Malware" on that drive. But malware may exsist on your other drives, maybes best to check all drives before you attempt anything.

Please download Malwarebytes:

Note

Do not start the free trial of Malware Bytes, deselect that option when prompted.

Run a full scan on each drive once downloaded, installed and updated.

2. This could be software or hardware issues, without mini dumps to analyse it will be hard to tell.
Perhaps updating the firmware on your SSD may help.

3. On some computers, F8 brings up the "Select boot device", and if that happens, hit Esc then keep
hitting F8 until the Advanced Boot Options screen appears.
First attempt may fail, so try a few times:
Tap the F8 as rapidly as possible, after hitting the Esc key, and see if the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
The SSD makes the PC boot so very fast that the advice of 'hit the F8 once a second' may not apply here.

Because you have reinstalled windows, do you have any recent Mini dump files you can post?

Please post a snapshot of your Disk Management:

Start> type in search manage, then click on Computer Management
Double click on Storage, in the centre pane, then double click on Disk Management.

I think a fresh install to just the SSD is the best way forward at this point as described in #2,
then we can sort out any BSOD issues if they remain.

Hey Dave,

I have tried to take the other 2 hdd's out and then the ssd was shown by the windows installer. I tried to reformat it , but it then crashed... The system could still start up though.

But maybe the problem is the ssd itself. It could be broken. So after trying some extra stuff, I'm probably going to take it out and put it in another computer. Have you got any programs that can check a ssd and search for errors?

Edit: using your esc and then spam f8 technique worked :)

There maybe another reason your SSD crashed and failed to install, apart from the obvious.

Did you update the firmware?

Hey Dave,

I managed to get the firmware update on an usb and finally clear the whole ssd. I'm now installing windows again and when I'm able to, I'll post all the disk management stuff. Thanks for your help! I'm sure you are one of the best guys I can find!

Hey Dave,

So I have everything installed and it seems fine (like it did yesterday too...). I couldn't find any dump files with the sevenforums program. It is configured ok, but there are none it says.

It is in dutch, so some things will not be understandable for you. "In Orde" means that it is ok. The rest shouldn't be too different in language.

And about malwarebytes. How can I run it on another hdd? It seems like it only looks into the C: drive.

Edit: I ran a benchmark on the ssd using HD Tune.

You may have to wait for another BSOD in order for it to produce new dump files.

I have asked other members to advise you better with your Disk Management for SSD, so
please wait for a response before you do anything.
