Three BSODs "caused" by ntoskrnl.exe, all hardware tests are fine

    Hi,

My computer has recently severely slowed down. It can become so unresponsive after a few minutes or hours of work that Windows 7 has to wait for the logoff sound to play before shutting down.

I have also had three crashes recently, all with different bug check strings (DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE, DRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL , and UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP) but all supposedly caused by ntoskrnl.exe. The dump files are attached.

I have tested my CPU, HD and memory with Hot CPU Tester Pro, I tested my memory with the built in Microsoft test, and tested my HD with chkdsk, and none of these tests had any errors.

I can't think of any recent changes I've made to the computer.

What could be the cause/solution to the problem?

    Thanks for the help,
    David

The BSOD is caused by Klif Mini-Filter fre_wnet_x86 (Kaspersky).
    Code:
    fffff880`03d847c8 fffff880`0365b7e7Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\klif.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for klif.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for klif.sys
     klif+0x237e7
Description here: Driver Reference Table - klif.sys

When an antivirus program is responsible for a crash, it is to remove it to make the situation stable; despite of all its greatness. Uninstall Kaspersky using Kaspersky Removal Tool. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

Also, Athrx.sys is failing here, too. Kaspersky, when failing, makes the network drivers fail, too (sometime it causes storage access problems as well).
    Code:
    fffff880`03d84058 fffff880`05ac2a75Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\athrx.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for athrx.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for athrx.sys
     athrx+0x6a75
And this driver is kinda old.
    Code:
    fffff880`05abc000 fffff880`05d72000 athrx T (no symbols)
        Loaded symbol image file: athrx.sys
        Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\athrx.sys
        Image name: athrx.sys
        Timestamp: Tue May 22 13:33:35 2012 (4FBB4857)
        CheckSum: 002BAFBB
        ImageSize: 002B6000
        Translations: 0000.04b0 0000.04e4 0409.04b0 0409.04e4
Athrx.sys is Atheros network adapter driver; but sometimes the driver is used by some other hardware. If you use any Atheros connection, update the driver from ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows (Atheros?????), by matching the model number.

Let us know the results. If it crashes again, next time upload your MSINFO32.nfo file anongwith the crash dumps.

    1. Click on the start button
    2. Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
    3. File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
    4. Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
    5. Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

    Update

    Hi,

    Thanks for the response.

I first tried fixing the Atheros problem because I didn't want to remove Kaspersky if I didn't have to.

I looked for an updated athrx.sys file (which is for a cb42/cb43/mb42/mb43 network adapter) but quickly found out that there are no recent drivers. I tried replacing the files with drivers for the network adapter which is supposed to be on the mobo, but the problem persisted and my wireless internet failed. However, putting the original files back has "fixed" my computer; I've run it since for long periods of time and so far there haven't been any slow downs or crashes.

What I did should not have fixed the problem, so I expect things will start messing up again soon. If I start having problems again, I'll uninstall Kaspersky and reply again.

Things did indeed mess up again, but I uninstalled and re-installed Kaspersky and everything is now working great. Thanks for the help.
