BSOD after clean install, new power supply & new motherboard.

Hi Clive,

There's something very odd going on with your computer, something I've never come across before. At the time of the crash, there was 6,255,194 spaces appended to the end of the CBS log!

I would like to have a closer look at the registry that was being inspected at the time of the crash:

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each
   
   regedit /e %SYSTEMDRIVE%\tom982.reg "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide"
   
   
4. This will create a text file called tom982.reg in the root folder of your main drive (e.g. C:\tom982.reg). Please attach this to your next post.

If the export is too big, please upload it to Free large file hosting. Send big files the easy way! and send me the link please.

then we can install Windows 7 SP1 and take it from there.

I'm so sorry for the delay, I completely forgot that you had sent me the file and I've just been waiting for you to reply!


I have downloaded the registry export and will review it now. What did you do to get that export by the way? You didn't follow my instructions in post #42, did you? It doesn't particularly matter as I've still got the information that I need but what you may not be aware of is that, by doing whatever you did, you have also given me a lot more information which would usually expose any licenses to software that you have purchased (including, but not limited to, Windows) but you have nothing to worry about in this scenario because you PMed me the link and I'm a decent guy who wouldn't stoop to such levels :) Plus your Windows license is OEM which isn't transferable and can only be used on your computer.


I have reviewed the registry export and now think that the key that it was looking at at the time of the crash wasn't the cause of the crash, I think it was merely coincidence and that something else caused the crash, which then went on to cut the CBS log short. One of your minidump files hinted at memory corruption which is a wild theory I had last week when I saw the 2,000,000+ spaces on the end of your CBS log.


Can you test your RAM with Memtest please: RAM - Test with Memtest86+


I would also like you to run a chkdsk scan: Disk Check


When chkdsk finishes (you will have to reboot), can you find the log and copy and paste it into your next post please: Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log

Hi Clive,

Just to eliminate all possible doubt, it would be best to try the other stick in the suspected faulty slot. Then I think we have the appropriate evidence that the motherboard is faulty and you should be able to RMA it if it's new.
