That's good to know. I always thought it was the opposite (the manufacturer's drivers performed better), and I didn't know NVIDIA's drivers were bad. One thing I know for sure is that both ATI's and Creative's drivers suck hard. Anyways, the download is progressing and I'll update later :)

You want the smallest driver download package which is what's delivered from Windows Update, and then still disable all of it's entries in Startup. Only those requiring special settings for overclocking (not recommended) or specialized audio component functions need the full software which is often problematic.

There will be several rounds of Updates with restarts, plus Updates will continue as you install programs.

Is it OK that I install BitDefender or should I stay without an AV for a while (shouldn't be a problem)/get MSE?

It's installing the updates already, 78/109. Will update :)

We recommend MSE here, or Avast, for best performance overall.

But I've never seen complaints about BitDefender.

    Great, we're good :)

Installed drivers through Windows Updates and the rest from the manufacturer's website/tool, and no freezes so far!

    Good news.

Keep us posted as you install programs. The more space you can give between program installs, the more certain you'll be what's causing it if it freezes later.

Right so, didn't install much. Aside from the drivers, Firefox, Thunderbird, Dolby Axon, Flash Player, Bitdefender, Java, MusicBee, .NET framework 4 and C++ redistributables.

Something weird happened, though: The computer slowed to a crawl, and when I opened "My Computer", it showed C: drive had around 5GB (of 1.80TB) of free space. I closed and opened it again, (by this time it was speeding up already) and it showed 1.30TB free - which is weird - and THEN it jumped down to 1.73TB of free space when I reopened it for the third time.

So there's no way to know if a program you've installed caused that because you installed them all at once instead of giving enough time between each install to monitor for problems.

As we had discussed you shouldn't have installed any programs except Firefox until you know for sure it is stable, then install one program and wait again until you know for sure there are no problems.

Isn't that why you did the reinstall, because we repeatedly urged you to do this type of troubleshooting install where you wait between program installs until you know it remains stable?

I'd run it like it is for at least a day to see what happens.

Yeah, I will. I installed these because other software needed them (.NET framework and C++ redist) or because I use them a lot. Songbird could have been causing the issues because it appears to have supported apple devices (thus the iTunes driver), some CD Ripping capability among other features. I switched to MusicBee and it seems stable now - the drive is working without the incompatible driver.

And actually, I gave them some hours before installing the next. If it freezes like this, I'd say it's the HDDs.

Installed some more Windows Updates, stable so far.

EDIT: Updated Adobe AIR, still looking fine. Creating restore point.
