Re: those USB drivers. I went to Device Manager and tried to update them, they said they were already up-to-date. I can go try and get manual upgrades, but I wasn't sure if the best thing to do was to Uninstall them and the Renesas USB Controller Program they're connect to? I wanted to make sure I was clear on the best way to tackle them.
Do you mean you tried updating them the method(s) mentioned in this tutorial? Driver Install - Device Manager. You can also follow steps outlined on the USB Driver - General Fix for Problems tutorial and see if it helps.

Do not know if this machine's under warranty or not. Re: Windows, I have done a factory reset. Not a clean reinstall from an iso, but the reset image did require me to set up Win7. I was worried this was a hardware issue causing all the errors, and didn't want to do a clean install only to start all over again trying to fix the issue, so that's when I came to the forum.
Hmm, I'm starting to think it is a hardware issue but we'll see.

Also, question about Memtest: the first time I ran it, it ran for 13 passes, error-free, and was after the system was warm for a few hours. So, should I just go and do the 8-10 passes for the cooled off variable?
Memtest is good at what it does but we have come across a few threads where one error was found after about 20 passes. If you do not want to run memtest that long, borrow RAM sticks that are compatible with the lappy, see if its stable works any better or does not give blue screens.

I have not been able to see any indication of overheating, even after tests. (Ended up going with Speccy.)

Thanks for the replies again, guys!

Selective startup is enabled. I had tried the first method. Second method didn't really help me. So, I searched for updates, including using Intel's diagnostic tool. Renesas' site was a little confusing, and Intel's tool didn't detect anything needing updating -- even though my versions of those files were clearly from 2010 like you had mentioned and Intel had files from 2011 and 2012. I uninstalled via Device Manager. After restart, Windows couldn't find the drivers. Again, Intel diagnostic wouldn't help. So, I searched manually for the driver installers and did it that way. So, now I have newer versions of those drivers.

Ran the "cool" Memtest for 20 passes. Again, no errors.

Below, I've attached the main/summary Speccy screen. Do you need to see a different one?

Thanks again, koolkat! I reset the CMOS. Haven't been able to buy a can of air yet to clean out the vents, but will pass on the rest of the advice to the laptop's owner. ( I'm going to keep a temp monitoring program installed and try and teach her what to watch out for.)

I wanted to upload the latest scan, as I got a BSOD for the first time in 24 hours today. It's another 1e, but I was hoping someone would be able to double-check and make sure I got everything software-wise taken care of, to be on the safe side. I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, I have a screenshot of a couple Windows Updates that just won't install, and haven't after multiple restarts. Not sure if this has to do with the problem I had been having, but wanted to include it just in case.

    Driver Verifier

Let's run driver verifier and see if it catches any misbehaving drivers: Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Hey, Koolkat! I turned on Driver Verifier yesterday when I got home for work. After a couple resets, trying to use different programs, and letting it sit idle no errors. Like clockwork, though, starting it up this morning after having it off all night gave me an error. It's a new one, F4, and I got it twice. Posting this in safe mode. I've uploaded the zip.

A bug check F4 is usually storage related. From your crystal disk snip it looks as if the temperatures are slightly up. What's the temperature of the hard drive when you boot up after a few hours of keeping the laptop off? But before we rule a hardware problem here I would recommend a clean install of windows, you can follow the steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 for a perfect clean install. Be slow and selective of what software you install and let us know if the system remains stable.

Basic Drivers/software to install on a clean PC:
    1. Graphic Drivers
    2. Sound Drivers
    3. Chipset Drivers
    4. Webcam/External Mouse Drivers (if you use them)
    5. Windows Updates
    6. Security Software

    Good Luck.

KoolKat, I used Speccy and SpeedFan to monitor temps, and I can't tell you the exact temperature off the top of my head, but I do feel like I've seen it get into the 50s after not being on for very long. (I know in SpeedFan it showed the little flame symbol on and off. I'm guessing to indicate it was too high. Speccy recorded a high temp of 61, but I can't remember how long the computer had been on at that point.) Unfortunately, the stores I went to were all out of the cans of air yesterday, so I'll have to try somewhere else today. I use it on a lapdesk and nothing blocks the fan, but I'm going to switch it to a different surface and see if that helps as well.

Will hopefully be able to clean out the fans today after work. I'll see what kind of temps I'm getting, and make not of it before reinstalling Windows.

So, I was handling the laptop to clean it with a can of compressed air to take care of the high temps, and I noticed something that I feel like an idiot for never noticing before. There was a piece of tape that I removed and when I did noticed that a corner of the back cover had been dinged and was coming a part a bit. I've included a pic, just in case this could have anything to do with the issues. (Though, I feel sort of stupid for even asking. And, unfortunately the owner is on a cruise, so I can't ask if the issues started around the time of the ding.)

I'm about to prep the laptop for Windows reinstall. (I also noticed that the cleaning didn't really seem to help the temps go down.)
