I'm glad you weren't overwhelmed by my long posts….I try to be diligent, which doesn’t work well with also being concise. Especially when saw that there were BSODs going on before I got ahold of this thing. I doubt that my daughter ever took the time to research and resolve any of those problems as long as she was able to boot back up, so that isn’t helping. Anyway, I suspected a driver was cause of the black screen when windows loads, but now know that it could also be caused by user account, power settings/plans, problems with Windows updates, etc…All of which I have found evidence of on this machine.
Since you didn’t really say much about the corrupt file, when it happened & the cause? I’m getting a lot of heat from my daughter to get this back to her so the sooner I have ANY answers for her the better. Since Sketchup uses .Net, it, I still really want to know if Sketchup was the cause of this or not.
Anyway…I won’t be able to get started until tomorrow morning, so until then, I just want to ask if I’ll be able to use your fix for the corrupt .NET file while in safe mode since I wasn’t able to install & run GPU-Z for some reason and when I tried to uninstall the Skype toolbar, I got “ The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed” pop up.

Both of you...Since this no longer looks like it’just going to be a matter of updating drivers and uninstalling some programs, do you guys think that it would be less time consuming/better to try either a repair install or clean reinstall? I have been trying to avoid that route but will if that is best I guess. What would you guys do?

It's hard to say what caused this file corruption but there's a good chance that your hard drive is at fault. It's nothing to worry about though, everyone gets one or two files corrupt eventually, I would only be concerned if I had to deal with 10+ files from different folders. When we've fixed the corruption, we can attempt a few diagnostics to make sure you're hard drive isn't on the brink of failure.
I'd put money on the Skype issue being related to this corrupt file. Like Sketchup, the Skype installer uses .NET and the corrupt file we have here, Microsoft.Build.Tasks.v3.5.dll, is used in the process of compiling .NET applications. With a bit of luck, fixing this file will solve everything!
I think it's best for us to run my fix, which should take a matter of seconds, then see where we are at that point. Follow Tom's instructions first, and from the outcome of those, we can decide what are the best steps to take :)
Tom.....If that fix solves everything, I might just have to hop on a plane to England and kiss you, then to East Midland to get you next "Blue Robot", but I'm not getting my hopes up yet.
I wish that I could say that I was going to be able to do it before work but I wasted too much time trying to figure out the easiest way to make another back up of my daughters stuff this morning and still didn't even do that.
Action Center shows back up is not set up and even typing that in the search box doesn't bring up options.
I already copied her files (one by one) awhile back, but just wanted to be sure that I got everything....Guess that will have to do because I'm sick of trying to figure out how Windows 7 thinks at this point.
Since I was unable to uninstall the Skype toolbar before, today I clicked on "change" to see what would happen.....got a pop up to "please wait until current program is finished uninstalling or being changed"...I waiting 5 min before hitting the OK button to close it.
I did also see that Facebook Video Calling - By Skype Unlimited - was installed 11/28/12 (or updated?? since I still don't get Windows 7 dates in control panel/programs).....So was Google Talk Plugin
Not sure how or why....part of a Windows update??? Due to around the day problem started...maybe I should uninstall those? If so, before or after running your fix??
Sorry that I have to run because I'm really anxious to try the fix now!
Do I need to make some restore/recovery discs first? I've been trying to figure out best way but still not sure and try to be as proactive as possible. Thanks!
Don't worry about anything like that for now. There's no risk with running my fix - it simply backs up file permissions, replaces the file, then restores the permissions on that file.
Just run the fix and we'll see where we are :)

ok....I was getting ready to do this and noticed that "Bing Bar" was in Programs with install date of 10/29/12 and recallled seeing in one of your posts NOT to install that (when I asked about Windows updates I think) Blue Robot. (Ironically, that Power Report...whatever it was called, that I provided was from 10/31 so wonder what caused it to run and if at all related??) Anway, I've combed back through the thread but don't see anything about the Bing toolbar anymore??? Am I imagining things or is it possible that I read it when I followed link to run the FIXit for Microsoft that Tom provided? Anyway...frustrated that I have 15 minutes before leaving for work again so here goes....Hope you were right about it only taking a few seconds Tom.....Just wanted to mention that about the Bing Toolbar, so please advise. I'll post back result as soon as I can.

Excellent, that's all gone through without any problems. Well I was wrong about it taking a few seconds, it actually took 0.374 seconds!
The Bing Toolbar isn't an issue, but I would personally uninstall it; I can't stand toolbars - they make browsing slower and don't improve your browser's functionality.
Remove the Bing Toolbar then run the FixIt in Aggressive Mode: You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services
